Color variations vs. color tolerance
#1Post by Wisbeers » Sat Feb 08, 2020 7:14 am
I’ve always struggled with how much of a color difference constitutes a variation, and I just acquired something that provides some clarity. These approval plates document a “color tolerance” range for printing this label. I don’t know how well the colors show up in the images, but these are clearly intended to show the acceptable levels of lightness to darkness when printing this can. I don’t know how far back this practice goes, but doubt that it was a new concept in 1971. And maybe this is well-known or has been addressed here previously and is just new to me, but FYI if not.

Re: Color variation tolerances
Neat subject. Thanx for posting.
These are the original documents presumably kept in a climate controlled location with limited light exposure. Over time, I suspect that the environmental factors only increase the variability in color.
That said, I am in the process of reviewing and standardizing the consistency of the captions and notes on the cans in the USBC II Supplement. For the most part, if I see 2 entries where there is only a slight color variance, I am adding a note, “Difference between 45-67 & 45-68 unclear.”. Unfortunately, some of this is due to errors in the original book. That does not mean that these are or are not design differences, it is only added to caution the user. Frequently, we are finding the color differences are due to changes in the canning company. Those changes have been deemed immaterial to be added to the Supplement as most do not collect those minor variances and the effort to capture all of those makes an already daunting task impossible.
Please let me know if you have any questions or comments on the above.
Thanx.

Re: Color variation tolerances
Very interesting topic. I was looking at the Rainier jubilees from the wind tunnel ( many of which were error cans. I have noticed that depending on the thickness of the colored paint of the cans leads to an appearance of more enamel vs more metallic. What are peoples thought of enamel vs metallic variations?? Re: Color variation tolerances
Just as a reminder, this isn't a discussion forum.....but a reference forum. If you would like to chit chat about this, please move it to General Discussion. I plan on leaving Jerry's comment as I believe it's a good piece of reference information.....but other conversations will be deleted eventually once they wind down. If you would like more permanence to your conversation, please have it over in "general"

Re: Color variation tolerances
Here’s a couple Texas color proofs. Pics aren’t great and the color graduations are pretty narrow.

Re: Color variation tolerances
Rainier Ale - Irwindale, CA
Marked “Standard” and “Light” on the bottoms of unlidded cans pulled off the line. From an ex-Heileman employee. I really see little difference in the two when in hand other than a slight slight lighter green. The tolerance difference sure was not great in range.

Not sure if this counts... (remove if it doesn’t)
These are the approved colors for Olympia cans from Continental Grahics Plant #67 in Paterson, New Jersey.
