Dug a cool sign.

#1

Post by Leon »

Yesterday me & a buddy got out to dig a Privy. I was only about 3 miles from Webmaster Dan Bora's house. This rare Reverse on glass sign may be the only one known to exist  And not Broken.

Double Click Pics to supersize

LEON.....I would have to assume it is the post-Pro version based on the brand name (not Extra Fine)....thoughts....if it was post-Pro and tasted crappy maybe that is why it ended up in the privy....

NO, Not post pro. From Peter Blums book Brewed in Detroit nothing is known to exist from post pro, Although I got a post pro Keg label I pictured. All the bottles found in this hole all ranged from around 1905-1915 approximately. Only dug 1 beer bottle which was a embossed P.H. Kling with the "Pure & Free of Drugs & Poison" Statement & bottle was made via the ABM (Automatic Bottle Machine) method which would date it anywhere from around 1905-1919. Everything found in hole pre pro. I did not get a good pic of the bottles, After finding & getting the sign I had little Interest in the common bottles we found. LEON.

If it did I'm glad it did.

P.S. Most big city's had indoor plumbing by the 1930's (post pro) & no longer using privy's. Also, all the medicine bottles we found would of been screw tops if from the 30's. These had the older cork tops or possibly glass stoppers. LEON.

Amazing. I thought about this find this morning ... 'why was this thrown in the privy?' Since this appears pre-pro I can only imagine a holier than thou temperance person in the household took the sign, or anything representing evil liquor and sent it down the crapper.

Research Project - find the leaders of the temperance movement and find out where they shat. May be quite the treasure trove

I was talking to a old timer Breweriana collector here in Michigan, he specialize's in Michigan & Mt Clemens Breweriana since he lives in Mt Clemens or did until recently. He's been collecting Breweriana for 40 years & Treasurer of N.A.B.A. He has lots of Mt Clemens Breweriana & said he has never seen this sign or one even like it with the almost 1/2 inch thick glass & beveled edges. Sounds like it could be unique 1 of a kind. Almost as good as pulling a Regal out

Great find Leon!
The house I grew up in here in Toledo was built in 1867 with numerous other well aged houses on that block, Of the twenty some that were there in the 60's & 70's whilst growing up there are now only 6 left (one of those is the house I grew up in and another is one my sister still lives in). Leon, I would invite you down for a Dig - I still know the people so permission wouldn't be a problem.
