OI Book - Documentation of issues

#1

Post by Rand »

All:

I took a pass at documenting the various issues/corrections with the USBC-OI book. Take a look at this URL and let me know if I missed anything, misspelled stuff, or if you have independent documentation for any of the cans in question.

Rand:

An excellent document and one that needs to be added to. It would be nice to have a complete version to insert inside my Lilek book.

I do think however that you should lose the RB logo at the top of the document as it suggests that the club has sanctioned and is behind it's publication.

It might be useful to credit Dave Waugh for the initial write-up of most of these items in his posting of 2 1/2 years ago. Dave does lots of photoshopping and web design and has credentials the rest of us don't when it comes to detailing this stuff. I'd bet he'd be thrilled to sign off on it, as well as to see what Rand has added. Not sure what he's up to these days, though I can occasionally get emails if my topic is interesting enough.

Perhaps setting up a poll regarding the use of the RB logo is the way to go, since e-voting is still...er... a rather sensitive topic.

I say keep it on the page! Rand did a marvelous job, and concisely states that the intention is to compliment a master work, not to rip into Kevin & the publisher.

We should also put the compilation somewhere on the site as a permanent link.

One can that I am almost sure I have seen is a Esslinger's Bock Quart. Not in person but in a magazine, either Beer Cans monthly or BCCA News. It was back during my first collecting period and was sometime between '79 and '85. There was a picture from a show that showed someone with a quart bock can in grade 1. I can't access the digital file on these from Randy's CD but I am sure he can. It is possible it was a cone instead of a flat but I seem to remember it being a flat.

Yes, you can see a photo of the Esslinger Quart Bock OI in the Jan 1980 issue of Beer Cans Monthly page 12. A great PA collection is shown as well. Must be several collections put together.....

What ever happened to the Kruger Special that was first pictured in the BCCA News Report? I dont remember which issues it was but could find it if I had an hour or two. Was that can fake??

BTW - did you get permission from Kevin to use photos from his book for this project?

For anyone who hasn't checked Rand's link, you should! This should be required for all Lilek book owners, to print out copies of this page and insert into their own books (or at least a post-it with the URL). And I do feel differently about a can like the Esslinger Bock quart, which can be independently verified, vs. the Bay State Beer, which sounds like no one can come up with a real example of it.

The Esslinger Bock quart and a couple others among Waugh's Dirty Dozen I've been told do exist, with owners who wouldn't allow Lilek to photograph them for various reasons. (security, privacy, didn't trust him, Kevin never knew who had the can, and so on) So Kevin took license to recreate what he believed to be out there on at least a few of them.

I think this is also the case with Rand's Neuweiler's, Kevin learned about the quotation mark variants very late in the process and was presumably just rushing to picture an example of some kind, even if not the real thing. I wouldn't be surprised to eventually learn of the real existence, somewhere, of all the fakes except for those repaints.

Cripes, Rand. That's pretty comprehensive work. Thanks for going to the trouble. I am no specific O/I enthusiast, but I own the Lilek book and I'll keep your supplmental information with it from now on.

Nice job - much appreciated.

This can, believe it or not, is the actual can shown in the USBC. It is a quart conetop without the lid and it still does not have a lid today, but it has a concave bottom and does not have opening instructions.
