1935 Wehle Paintover

#1

Post by yoerg4 »

I've had this can for some time and curiosity finally got the better of me. It is a 1935 Wehle Ale, Lilek #861. The thing I find intereasting about it is that it is a paintover from 1935-36. The can under it is a large R Rheingold similar to Lilek #732. If you look at the pictures closely you can just make out the enamel banner of the Rheingold can.

Has anyone seen another can like this?

I can confirm as I have 2 of these as well. One, you can see the "ghost label" of the Rheingold, but I have left as the Whele, and the other, you can see the "ghost R" coming thru the Whele label and I have rubbed out enough to see the O/I panel for the Rheingold can. Tough work though as the paint on the O/I Rheingold is so thin due to it being a metallic type can. All of my beer stuff is packed away due to a move over the summer, but I remember having some sort of reference material that showed the dates that these brewers starting canning beer. What is remarkable to me, If I remember correctly, is that Whele started canning BEFORE Rheingold, which kind of blew my mind and means I can only conclude that Rheingold did not package their beer in the O/I container very long at all if Whele acquired O/I Rheingold cans to paint over and use with their own long opener label. That may help explain the rarity of the O/I Rheingold. I also suspect that some long opener Wheles may also hold the O/I Liebmann's label underneath!! Now how amazing would that be to stumble across one of those!!!

That is what I was hoping when I first noticed the double label. I wonder if Liebmann ordered a run of cans and then had second thoughts? This all would have had to happen in 1935-36 which is amazing. Is this the earliest paintover?

After American Can Company completed the Rheingold O/I order, they re-used the overages of the uncut Rheingold flat sheets. There's the potential of other brands being under that run of Colonials as well if the American Can Company was salvaging previously printed on master sheets of other brands that day.

Why drive 12 hour one way to dig Pre-Tax Tru Blu ales, Genny 12 Horse Longopeners, Gamecock Ales, Apollos, Neuweilers Bock, and Krueger’s Baldies when you can locally drive 10 hours round trip and dig Pfeiffer, Goebel, Drewrys and Strohs?

Too bad the paint on the Colonials is 1/8" thick!
On that note it is odd to think of rubbing out a long opener can to get to something else underneath.
