Great Historical Piece on Boca Beer and the recovery of a 150-year-old recipe.....

A Tahoe ghost town held the lost secret to a 150-year-old beer

One hundred and fifty years ago, a tiny town sprang up near Lake Tahoe along the Truckee River — but not Truckee. The town, called Boca, was established as a camp for men building the Central Pacific Railroad. But after the transcontinental railroad was finished in 1869, the town didn’t go bust. Instead, it leaned on a natural resource the town had in spades: ice — and lots of it.

Local entrepreneurs with keen business acumen soon realized they could sell blocks of ice to the railroad for insulated freezer cars, allowing Central Valley farmers to ship their produce east with minimal spoilage. But a different type of entrepreneur started using the ice for something else likely to be just as popular with local farmers and the men of Boca: beer. Specifically lagers, which require extended cold storage after brewing.

In their initial research, Petyo and his team made several trips to the former Boca town site, now abandoned save for a few historical signs and restored grave sites. They searched the small area, looking for clues near the footprint of the dead-and-gone brewery that may lead them in the right direction. After hours of searching, they found what they were looking for: 150-year-old nonnative hop plants, indicating they were planted intentionally.
