Meet at the Midway
The "White Birch Digging Club" ( Ziphippy, Schmitty Jeff, RockBob, Two Gallon Tom, Beast of Burden and me) got out for a dig this past October for a few days of digging in Wisconsin. We thought we would try the Southwest corner of the state, an area that most of us have never checked out or even been. The hope was to possibly dig up some of the smaller less distributed brands; like Fauerbach, Peerless, Mineral Spring, Potosi and Huber to name a few. The plan was to meet at the Midway Motel in Viroqua, WI on Friday, where Tom secured us lodging. We knew that the terrain and land use posed some challenges, but arm with some old topo's and ideas we charged forward with our plan.
The guys were already hard at it when I arrived Friday evening. I found them near Readstown, left my truck at a gas station, and jumped into Bjorn's truck. We checked out a few spots before dark. Did anyone check the silo? We got to the Midway; We tailgated in the parking lot where Jeff cooked us up some tasty Elk Brats. A bucket of Kingsbury tabs was all that was found.
Saturday morning it was Jeff and Bob with Bjorn in his truck they were heading Northwest, and Tom and Patrick with me in my truck heading southwest. We weaved east and west while heading south without much luck. We eventually found ourselves near Potosi and decided to play hooky from dumping and checked out the Potosi Museum. Only $3 (senior price) and it comes with a pint of beer. Back on the hunt! We headed deep into the valley and ended up in... We got back to the Midway with no cans for our effort. Bjorn and Bob were there, and Jeff had went home, they did as bad as we did. Bjorn cooked us up some burgers and we came up with a new plan to head up to the North Woods in the morning. We decided to head up near Hayward, we caravanned the three-hour drive north. We stopped at this roadside motel to secure lodging and to ditch four of our five vehicles. Tom and I went in to book the rooms. It was Sunday and our motel hostess came out fully decked out in her Green Bay Packers gear, once she found out I was from Chicaoland and Tom was originally from Chicago, the friedly rivalry banter ensued. She said she had two perfect rooms for us, but they would not be ready till later. We told her that would be fine that we would be out digging all day. We Paid her and as we walked out the door she turned and said "the Bears still suck! then she cackled, and continued to laugh even after the door had closed.

Re: Meet at the Midway
So the five of us pile into Bjorn's truck and in a short time we are into some rust. We got permission from the landowner for this one.
We soon found ourselves in a thirties dump. Condition was rough but we box up some cans. We found a couple more dumps of mostly soda cans. but that's about it. We spent another night in the roadside motel, staying in room thirteen. I don't think I could have slept in room twelve. I kept about 35 cans from the 30's dump. Another Fun adventure in the sticks of Wisconsin, looking forward to my next adventure.
Here's to mud on your boots.
Rusty
We found a few dumps nothing of age, but we got some rust in the truck. We got back to the motel and got our rooms. Bjorn, Bob and I got room thirteen and Tom and Patrick got number Twelve. Our room was Deer themed.
But Tom and Patrick's room was Packer themed....AAHHHHHHHHHHHH!
You could hear our hostesses cackling laughter echoing down the hall.
The next day Monday, we said goodby to Bjorn and Bob who had to take off. So, Tom Pat and I headed out in my truck. We soon found ourselves in a thirties dump. Re: Meet at the Midway
Love the soda cans! Holiday soda was a staple in the Matson house in the 70's & 80s'. They were all flat tops, including the crimped steel.
Those antler toilet paper dispensers are the coolest!!

I've added quite a few Holiday cans this past year, the cola on the bottom row is the only metalic can I've found.kamsquared wrote: ↑Sun Mar 12, 2023 6:28 pm Love the soda cans! Holiday soda was a staple in the Matson house in the 70's & 80s'. They were all flat tops, including the crimped steel.

I agree Tom that was cruel, and certainly qualifies you for un-lucky dumper honors. I don't think room #12 will be so apropos for the Packers room next year.

Room # 1 2 the GB Packer room no longer has any lighting or windows, the room has gone in " The Dark " . Patrick.
