Think I’ll leave the Captain Obvious Grace Bros primer can as is- there is a Canada Dry Rooti hiding underneath.

Found this in a small collection. I have two other ones but they are usually mission sodas underneath. This one happened to have a scratch showing gold underneath.

Great can! United States Brewery cans like the Brown Derby are usually good candidates.
A Volks Brau just sold on eBay, Don L. (specks169) old can- he found under a Prima. Ziphippie

ZipHippie! You are the master of the paintovers!
Your All American is an Atlas can which would definitely be a flat top (vs a Drewry's).

If you did find a Drewry's All American paintover, I don't think you could declare it a flat top or a pull tab because it's a transition can, correct? The top paint can top doesn't declare it either a flat or a tab....because it's a paintover. The painted over can is going for the ride when it gets lidded.

I might not be making sense but let me know if you know what I'm talking about.

I follow what your saying, the bottom can was not intended to have the lid it now has and a transition can makes it even more difficult to discern. Sheets that have been painted(inked) over could’ve been sitting in the corner of the warehouse for months- or years. The only All American tabs I’ve seen are the one in the book and JustJoes rubout. I simply enjoy different things, like my Miller juice tabs. I’ll get back to rubbing during the winter months. Ziphippie

Sadly, the masters of this craft have passed away.
My nominations for master status goes to:

Name- Rusty Buncher

Scott Rollert- Scott Rollert
Mike Dahms- Wagner/Jolly Scot rubout
Don L. - specks169

Feel free to add to this list.

I finally landed one that Scott R. posted pre-Covid. Just check out his patience and skill. Never a sign of blow through on fragile metallics- his work still amazes me. Wish I could’ve met him, I had the privilege of meeting the other candidates- Ziphippie

Not to take anything away from Mike and Don, but Scott's work still blows my mind ! Maybe @mark rollert can give us some insight to his method ? It appears to me that he started at the seam and worked his way around the can flawlessly right down to the underneath label. Which is extremely difficult given the paint "Ink" thicknesses vary by how many colors are applied at any given point ! That and the finished cans are amazing ! Like I said before, I think his work is the "Gold Standard".
Having said that I'm not sure where his paintover cans are ? But I for one would like to buy one to put on my top shelf, to be Amazed and Inspired !

Agree 100% with JustJoe, truly amazing. I thought he claimed to use rubbing polish instead of rubbing compound, might be in the archives somewhere. I will definitely look for it. I would love to have one of his cans as well. His Pueblo Kol can is one of the coolest, nicest cans from a dumper possible! Ziphippie

My son needed to make a a short documentary for college on something that someone is passionate about. So he asked if he could do it on my paintover cans. In the name of education I agreed.

He did get an A on the project !

Hello fellow RB'ers-
Thanks for the props to my brother Scott, his work on paintovers was truly amazing! We first started finding paintovers in the early 1980's and Scott was on a "mission" to figure out the best paint removal methods possible on those paint overs. His key to success was "HAVE PATIENCE AND TAKE YOUR TIME", which I never had. Scott was a watch maker by trade, so attention to detail and patience were his daily routine. After years and years of trial and error he had developed a successful routine using a combination of Acetone, Rubbing Compound, and Polishing Compound to remove the layers of paint layer by layer. He would start at the seam and work a 1/2 inch strip top to bottom, usually taking several hours per strip. To apply the compounds he used Q Tips for the large areas and a tooth pick for getting under the under the rims and in the rough spots. He would also use a lighted desk magnifier for better vision. But first and for most he said " PATIENCE PATIENCE". And yes the Walters Kol can is spectacular and is now proudly displayed in my Colorado collection.
Mark-
Looking for my birthday Lucky can too. Aug 18 55

I think there are 3 or 4 of these in the wild(?). The rubouts are the best shape and are documented on this site. They are not fun to rubout.

Way to go, JustJoe! Sweet Old Ranger but that PBR under the BLabel is a heartbreaker. This has inspired me to buy some fresh rubbing compound and get after some cans (carsbr549 gave me a BLabel to work on a couple months ago and it has a Big Cat under it) that are on my workbench. Didn’t find this one in the soda book- Ziphippie
