Re: Morean Auction 11-27-2022
Hard to tell, Sunday is travel day of Thanksgiving weekend.
I'll be flying back to the States from Tierra del Fuego.
Hopefully my private jet will have good wifi and I can unload some powerball bucks.

Travel shouldn't be a problem. The guy driving next to you, is probably texting a bid.

Re: Morean Auction 11-27-2022
Silver Dime J sells for $2600 pre fees, Tru Blu ale quart for $25000. Both were rough and yeah Silver Dime was worse but they have to be in the same neighborhood rarity wise, right?
I got skunked again, finished 2nd a couple of times but one of them I was relieved someone bailed me out as I thought I went too high with my early bid.
On the Schmidt scenics I am starting to believe the lighter, almost pink, red logo cans aren't really faded. I have several like that and some are so nice it's hard to believe it's faded, they all seem to have that same shade of red. Anyone else have an opinion on this? This is the can that made me think of it again:

Re: Morean Auction 11-27-2022
I don't know much about the Tru Blu Ale quart, but the number was a big surprise. The Silver Dime is the only one I know of that's not from the original find of six partially full cans (leakers). I'd rank it 6th for display value, though two of the leakers with better faces have major paint loss on the back. The auction result was more or less what I thought it should do.ConeAddict wrote: ↑Sun Nov 27, 2022 4:01 pm Silver Dime J sells for $2600 pre fees, Tru Blu ale quart for $25000. I wanted the Kuebler Ale but had to bow out. In retrospect, I should have bid more. I did get one of the few bargains I saw today, the Union Cream Ale. I had Dan shoot me a normal photo of it when he first put the auction up and it looks better than the auction photos show it.
I thought the Hull's Lager and the Associated cone would top the results, but what do I know?

Like the Energizer bunny, this auction is still going. If you have not already spent all your money, you may want to check it out. Actually, there is something I am interested in coming up so I hope you have already spent all of your money.
Focus: Cones and flats from Michigan, South Bend, and Fort Wayne. Foreign cans only if I bought them myself in the country of origin.

Is Snowcrest now a $6,000 can?
I know it's whatever the market brings but is that way high?

The Arizona Brewing Co. version is much tougher than the Grace Bros. version, and the last one Dan auctioned brought $8,265.cantankerous wrote: ↑Sun Nov 27, 2022 5:41 pm Is Snowcrest now a $6,000 can?

My opinion is that an isolated auction result means nothing. Looking at the Grace Bros. Snowcrest as a handy example, Dan auctioned a "minty" example for $936 in July of 2021. In April of 2022, one brought $3,306. Good luck drawing a meaningful conclusion on value from this . . .

Re: Morean Auction 11-27-2022
I just noticed that the Union Cream Ale I won today is the same one Dan auctioned in March. It carried stickers for Dave Reid and McCaslin in March, and now it has just the Todd Peters sticker. It was about $900 less today . . .

I thought the Badger variation with Manhattan mandatory went reasonable.
$14,000 difference, didn’t know there was such a difference in demand and/or rarity.

Re: Morean Auction 11-27-2022
When Beercansplus started their auctions, I used to click in bids on cans that I knew would blow by what I had entered. Most times,it would be well before the actual live auction ever began. I'm not sure if it was fuled by beer or me thinking I was some sort of can expert, but I crossed the four-figure mark when they had a Siesta can listed in 2020. Much to my dismay, fellow collectors didn't think nearly as much of it as I did. I won it. Dan even asked me "do you really want it?" and may have been asking if I wanted to back out. Nope, those were my fingers that typed out the bid. It sat amongst my 20 or so cans as a reminder of my stupidity. It WAS a pretty can though.
It was mailed to Dan in June and sold on Sunday. I never thought empty beer cans would be considered "an investment."

According to Dan, the Manhattan mandatory is even more scarce than the Whitewater one. Not sure how this price difference happened. I'm kinda bummed since I have the Manhattan mandatory one. lol

Re: Morean Auction 11-27-2022
You got a screaming deal on that can! Good for you. Who says you can't get a good deal on a good can these days?
Interesting on these Union cans how a few cans have been re-sold multiple times over the past few years. It would appear to casual observer that there are more cans in circulation than there really are. Also, I'm sure Marc has seen more of these than me over the years, but it seems as though many of these might have come from the same source. All opened with a single large church key, similar patina on the lids, some odd, jagged scratches here and there on the sides, and all have a few (or more) pin size humidity spots. Probably all from the same find.

Re: Morean Auction 11-27-2022
I sold this Mule Head quart back around 2012 for $2k. I was warned not to sell it. I guess IMPOSSIBLE cans appreciate in value more than others! 17%/yr increase beats the S&P 500! Re: Morean Auction 11-27-2022
Thanks, Bob. It's one thing to throw a half-hearted bid in on a can because it looks like it might go low, but I was ready to go to the mattresses for this one and didn't have to. I've lost track of how many times I've been the underbidder on one of these the past three years or so. I wish I could look up my own bid history - I was probably the underbidder last time this can sold.OhioCanGuy wrote: ↑Tue Nov 29, 2022 8:53 pmYou got a screaming deal on that can! Good for you. I forget the guy's real name now, but "pimapuma" sold one on eBay before Dan listed any of his. Dan's had six in his auctions now, and this is the only one that's come up twice. I went quite a long time without seeing one available, but oddly a similar number popped up for sale at shows in a relatively short amount of time 20 - 25 years ago. One of the sellers back then mentioned a very old find - he didn't know how many or when exactly. It's certainly not as common as the recent activity suggests, but I'd guess there must be a case or so. A collector here in Michigan has had one for decades, and he noted that it's the only metallic can in his collection that spotted sitting on his shelf all those years.

Re: Morean Auction 11-27-2022
Back in the 1970's a case of indoor Union Cream Ale was found by Al Winterfield of Wallingford Connecticut. Most were in really fine condition, all grade-1 or better. Al was a pioneer of brewery collecting long before the hobby went mainstream. He had a mind-blowing collection of Conn. breweriana but he also dabbled in cans, turning up some real gems before the hobby got really hot. He passed away many years ago.
This Yale RPOG I believe was also found by All and was a centerpiece of his collection.

Re: Morean Auction 11-27-2022
Well now. In this November auction there were three Sick's Select cans. I was interested in two of them. The first one was listed as 133-26, which I needed. Closer inspection showed is was mis-labeled and was in actuality 133-27. I did not need that one, so I am glad I did not bid on it. I hope who ever won it realizes the error prior to the live bidding. The other can I was interested was 133-13. It would be an upgrade for me. I never really had seen this can available much, but just figured it was one that stayed on the left coast. I was surprised when it was categorized as both scarce and then rare.
I was going to stretch and bid more than I ever have, but I never thought it would go to the level it did! 11,400 with the buyers premium. Way out of my capability. I guess I will have to be content with my rare-but-crusty example.
So, my question to the board is: was anyone not surprised by this result? Or was this in line with people's expectations?

Re: Morean Auction 11-27-2022
Actually 133-13 is the one with "Oregon's Extra Pale" in the upper left of the label. It is also non-IRTP. The can you pictured does not have the verbiage on the label, so I am assuming it is from Seattle.

Re: Morean Auction 11-27-2022
The can pictured is the correct one for the auction. You can see the Oregon statement in the far left picture plus the brewery on the seam.
This can is relatively easy to find off grade and I've dumped it on numerous occasions. The IRTP version is definitely tougher but still not too hard to track down and I've dug a few.
$11,000 for this can is an insane price and perhaps the most egregious example (of many) of overpaying since these dealer auctions begin. The 30K triangle comes to mind as another example but that was an offgrade example of an impossibly rare can. This is a relatively nice example of midrange can that is quite obtainable so hard to compare. Finding this label in top grade is difficult as it's very prone to spotting and humidity. The auction can has some flaws which makes the price even harder to fathom. I have one about a half grade lower that I'd sell for 90% less in a heartbeat.
IMO the only really rare non-OI Sick's Select is the IRTP version from Seattle with the gold trim. All the others can be had with a little patience in decent but not pristine condition.
The luckiest dumpers don't rely on good fortune, the unluckiest do.
