When the Levy Breaks
Wixom Lake Adventure
Took a trip out to drained Wixom Lake in central Michigan with my buddy Ray during our Indian summer on November 5th and 6th.
It's about a five and a half hour drive for me here in Northeastern Illinois. I google earthed the lake the night before to find a place to park and venture out from. It took us a while but we eventually found a place to park, we got permission from a commercial establishment on the lake. This is a very private lake with practically no public access. We ended up on the Northeastern part of the lake up near the lighthouse and spent most of our two days searching here. It was a lot of fun and great relaxing get away. Here's some pictures from our adventure.
This is where M30 ends, Bridge Out. We drove down to Midland for lodging about 20 min. away.
more pics coming up.............

Re: When the Levy Breaks
Friday morning we headed back to the same spot, I was starting to get into some cans when I ran out of daylight the day before.
I did best in the cracked areas. down near the lighthouse. I dropped my cans off at the truck and went to go find Ray I thought we might go find another spot. I saw him down by the river and cut through another area with the cracked up ground and the little trees growing when this can surprised me. Yeah! now were digging!! This is my first and only Ohio OI, Whoo hooo!! of coarse I had to keep searching this area a little longer, but we decided to go find another acccess point. I wanted to ge on to the wide part of the lake. we drove around and talked to a few locals, but they were not much help. We ended up back on M30 and walked the dyke down to the breach in the dam. we poked around there for a while, but I wasn't feeling it. so with just a couple hours of daylight left we went back to the other spot by the lighthouse and finished our time there,
Well here is what I brought home, some cool discoloration. I think this lake is very can rich, lots of targets. Of all the lakes I've dug I think this lake has the potential of being the best. It is big, over 2000 acres, I barley scratch the surface.
The Galvanic effect seems pretty strong in this lake as all the cans have severe seam damage and the tops of all the tabs have completely dissolved.
I never hit that sweet mud with the great condition, though, I bet there's areas out there like that. You Michigan boys need to get out there and check it out, Regal Lager potential. To me it's a lot of fun and you never know what you might find. I'll be Back!!

Thanks Danny,
It's one of those rare occasions when the best can found is also the best condition.

Re: When the Levy Breaks
Yeah, I couldn't resist with the great weather we had. I'm glad I was able to get out there before winter, with the long Thanksgiving weekend I almost headed back out there yesterday.
These folks have a long battle ($$$) to get there lake back, I think it will be drained for a very long time.

Re: When the Levy Breaks
Secord Lake to the north has a dam that spills into the Tittabawassee River that forms into Smallwood Lake but continues as the Tittabawassee River into Wixom lake held back by the Edenville Dam which formed the beginning of Sanford Lake. Edenville and Sanford Dams collapsed so the affected property is in the neighborhood of 4,169 acres.
From this story in the Detroit News: https://www.detroitnews.com/story/opini ... 244236001/
Built in 1924, Edenville Dam is made up of an earthen embankment, concrete spillways, and a hydroelectric generation facility that supplied electricity to Consumers Energy until 2018. Behind the dam was a 2,600-acre reservoir called Wixom Lake. A few miles south, Sanford Dam formed the 1,569-acre Sanford Lake.

Edited to add map.

Re: When the Levy Breaks
That's great Info. Ed, Thanks
There you go, over 4000 acres, how much area can a person cover in a day?...one acre....two?
This would make a great group dig. I know there's at least one campground on the lake, Smiths Landing I think?
Get a bunch of RBers to fill the campground for a long weekend.( I would think they would be hungry for the business) In the morning everyone heads out on the lake detecting, we head back to camp in the evening and show what we found, cook up some food, a few cold ones, campfire sing along..... sounds like a blast to me.

Re: When the Levy Breaks
That Waldorf is in great shape, all things considered! I'm not familiar with the can so I looked it up.

Re: When the Levy Breaks
Thanks Dwight, It's great to put a shinny can on the shelf! .....and you can't beat a good rocking chair, I tried talking Ray into keeping it. He could have restored it to It's original glory.

Looking good Rusty. Being a fisherman I can't help to wonder how many snags that rocking chair is responsible for. tom

Re: When the Levy Breaks
Should you do a return group outing, I would be interested. I live less than 90 minutes from there. I actually drove through that area Memorial Day weekend with the intent of exploring the lake bottom. After witnessing the devastation in the area and seeing all the people still cleaning up their messes, I decided it was too soon.

Awesome Rusty! Great photos and story as usual.
I would love to get in on that group outing you speak of. Please keep me in the loop if it comes together.

Re: When the Levy Breaks
What a great story. Only about 45 minutes from my house, I wish you would have let me know. I guess there is no more to the story to add to the Rustlings by the look of your content here.
