Black Eagle
This is more a question of personal opinion than anything, as there is no "wrong" answer. Let's say that you add a Black Eagle can to you collection, the one that lists only "Class & Nichods", nothing about Manhattan. Would you display it along your other Pennsylvania cans, given that is the state listed on the Black Eagle, or would you display it with your Illinois cans, given that it was probably brewed and canned in Chicago?

Re: Black Eagle
I would collect it as a PA can if I was a PA collector, and I would collect it as an IL can if I were an IL collector. If I collected PA and IL, I would probably have an aneurysm trying to figure out where to put it.

Pennsylvania, based on the mandatory language. Theories and suspicions aside, I cannot count it as an Illinois can if it doesn't say so.

I have a similar dilemma. I have my J-Spouts displayed in one place on the walls. I have my olive drab cones displayed in a different place. So where do the olive drab J Spouts go? Matt

Re: Black Eagle
The Bocks, the first Manhattan Beer and the first Black Eagle are the only Manhattan cans that fit my core collecting criteria now, and I don't have any of them. The Bocks would be displayed with my Bocks, and the other two would be displayed with my 1935 cans, side by side, as I'm going to sort them by brewery so, for example, Mule Head and Ox Head would be together.
I have a Manhattan Ale and might add a couple other Manhattan cans, and these would be displayed as part of my "I just like it" group.
When I collected Manhattan cans heavily years ago, I displayed them as a group regardless of what was printed on the can. I put the Imperial in the group too, knowing full well that it and the Class Beer are the two suspected Manhattan cans where some real doubt exists.

Re: Black Eagle
Pretty simple, it goes with the "B" cans.
My problem is with cans like "Near Beer". I always used to put those with the "N" cans, although a case could be made for putting them with the "P" cans because of the small "Pale". But the USBC book has sort of forced my hand and I now put them with the "G" cans.
I am still putting my Carling Black Labels with the "C" cans though, the USBC is just wrong on those. Of course I have enough of them that they won't get lost no matter where I put them.

Re: Black Eagle
I have great admiration for people who have the patience and care to display their cans alphabetically. But, because I am impatient and seem to lack the time, I've never done it that way. Re-arranging the shelves after every show or at best a few times a year when I've accumulated enough cans to justify the effort, well, a man has got to know his limitations. Instead, I've always displayed them regionally, with some other variables like irtp vs 1950s stuff, along with other quirks like placing cans with mountains together, bock cans together, cones together, cans I've dumped myself together, etc. Really, my collection is a bit of a mess to those who value order and organization.
I love the idea of putting a Black Eagle between a Chicago Black Dallas and a Blue & Gold OI, but alas, I have neither can in the collection (yet!)
SO, I decided to put it with the Manhattan Brewery cans. But, as fate would have it, those cans are just below my Pennsylvania cone tops, so the Black Eagle has some cousins nearby!

Ed, a fine question indeed. The Imperial, along with a few other Chicago OI's, are over in the "dug it myself" section of the collection. Like I said, it's a bit of a mess around here.

Re: Black Eagle
Here are a few more. The 70s, 80s, and 90s were very good to me. The Bud Bock was 2004, and the Old Milwaukee "school house" was around 2007. Things have dried up a bit after about 2011. Still, I've added a few shelvers during the past eight years that I was able to dig up myself. The two photos represent a small percentage of the "dug myself" stuff. I can remember exactly where I found most of them, who I was with, the weather, sometimes even the smell of the dump..... We are a weird bunch, 'eh?

Is that a paper label Glueks? You mean the paper label stayed intact in the dump? that's unusual although I've seen some bottles with labels hold up in dumps sometimes. LEON.

Re: Black Eagle
Yeah, we found those Gluek's paper labels in quite a few dumps in the Mark Twain National Forest back in the 80s and 90s. I think that the area surrounding Fort Leonard Wood was most productive, and I've always wondered if the Gluek's were shipped to the Ozark towns around the military base specifically with the recruits and soldiers in mind. We found other Malt Liquor cans just in that same area over the years. like Fox Head, Country Club, and the rare Malt Liquor cans from Muehlebach.
Most of the Gluek's had no label left, but quite a few still had at least partial labels intact. The labels being foil and not just paper was key, and it seemed that deep pine needles helped with the preservation. For the can pictured, I had to pull off the label to soak the can in oxalic, and also gently brush the dirt off the label with a soft bristle tooth brush. Then I used Elmer's to re-attach the label to the can.
That was 35 years ago, and I doubt that if we found another dump of these in 2019 that there would be anything left of the labels.

Re: Black Eagle
John, very cool story about where you found those Gluke's Stite crowntainers. When I first started collecting beer cans back in the mid '70's, my dad told me stories about drinking those while he was stationed at Ft. Leonard Wood! I could never find a picture of one in any of the books I had at the time so I always wondered if there really was a can like he described. It wasn't until the USBC I came out that I saw one but by that time his Alzheimer’s had really take a toll and I'm not sure he recognized it when I showed him. But it's entirely possible my dad drank those cans you found!

Re: Black Eagle
OK, Kotto, Sorry to be a PITA but I have one more Question. I'm curious to know if that Gluek's Paper Label Crowntainer sez "Brewed & Canned By" or "Brewed & Bottled By" I've seen them both ways but always just figured the ones that say Bottled by were fakes made with Bottle labels. BUT, Some say they are legit that way? What's yours say? LEON.

Re: Black Eagle
Leon, you're gonna love this....... Neither. The label reads "Brewed and Filled by"
Joe, the fact that your father recalled drinking those Gluek's crowntainers is so cool! It validates my thoughts that the cans were sold down there near the Fort, perhaps at the base (Officer's Club maybe?), and not brought in by tourists. Believe me, we've dug plenty of tourist cans in the Ozarks, but there were just too many Gluek's crowntainers in too many dumps around that area to have been randomly brought in by fishermen or campers from Minnesota.
Judging by the vintages of the cans we found along side the Gluek's, would it be safe to say that your father was at Fort Wood sometime during the period of about 1952 to 1955 or so?

Maybe that's what I meant? I know one said bottled by & not positive what the other said, just know it did not say bottled by. I'm sure there are people in here that got both of them. Just would of been surprised if it said bottled by. Anyways, Thanks.

Re: Black Eagle
Yes John, the early part of that timeline fits with when my dad was there. Not sure when he arrived but I know he met my mom there in May, they married in August (3 months!) and he shipped out for Korea in September of 1952. I'm not familiar enough with those crowntainers to know when they were sold but for sure in '52. If you have any left that you found, I'd be interested in one. It would be cool to have a can my dad MIGHT have drank when he was 24!
