My first CANvention: Your trading advice, please!
I rented a trading table and purchased three can totes... Omaha here we come. But, what cans should I bring to have the best trading experience? Does everybody already have all the good 1970s straight-side steel cans? I figure 1990s–2000s aluminum is not worth bringing, right? However, current craft brews from various local places would be good, yes? Are foreigns good to bring? This long-time collector, first-time CANventioner would appreciate all your suggestions. Thanks in advance!

Bring as much as you can fit in your car/truck. You may have stuff other folks don't.

OK. I've actually never been to any show before. And I'm flying, so I'm mailing my traders. I guess I'm overthinking it. Thanks y'all!

Re: My first CANvention: Your trading advice, please!
Welcome to your first canV - you will have a great time and then some. As for what to bring - that it a diffcuillt question but will give it a try:
70s tabs: bring some, prob not very many - there are some collectors that still collect them, but only the ones they need (what ever that means)
1999s alum: same as above
craft cans: still popular, bottom opened and or full of course
foreign: same recommendation as 70s and alum tabs.
As for the other traders - you prob have a limited stock - so just bring what you have.
Another option is that on the last day, you can take all your ss cans (no alum) and put them in the Rusty Bunch dump (always a good time). That way, you will not have to take them back home and carry them around for the next 3 - 6 years.
My $0.02

Re: My first CANvention: Your trading advice, please!
Welcome to the wild and wacky world of Canvention! There is so much to see and to do that it can seem a bit overwhelming, but you're going to have the time of your life. Don't miss the Craft Beer Night or the Rusty Bunch Bottom Boys Blues Band concert Friday night!
You will see cans and signs and bottles that you've never seen or heard of. Whatever you collect, somebody will have it for sale or trade. You'll see some of the coolest and most amazing beer stuff that was ever made. There is plenty around for every budget.
Now then, what to bring?
1) 70s and 80s cans do trade some if you have grocery brands or regionals. Commemoratives are harder to move if your space is limited. Bring some, especially if you have variations. There are people who hunt down little variations in 70s tabs and are ready to buy or trade for them. I'd bring a few, but not a lot.
2) 90s aluminum, again if you have locals or regionals from that time, again, not very many.
3) if you save craft cans, you can trade those well. Bring your locals! Craft cans from larger more national craft brewers don't trade as well. Brewery-only cans always move well, as will anything local from the last year. Older craft cans usually go slower. Bring a lot of your newest local crafts and they should trade well. Bottom opened or full preferred.
4) Foreign, same thing as 1 and 2. I don't deal in newer foreigns to know how they move
5) Flats and zips and cones- these trade well anywhere from mint to rusty, as long as it's displayable. Again, local and regional brands are best.
One more note with the craft stuff- hit your local brewers and pick up stickers and coasters. Lot of people collect those too, and they're easy to pack.
Good luck and I'll see you there!
"Dixie" Dave

Re: My first CANvention: Your trading advice, please!
Welcome to the fun.
Obviously, bring money. There will more much to "need" than you have money for--and that goes for nearly every attendee!
As for what to bring....especially flying....bring a variety of things, because you never know what will trip someone's trigger. If you have small, easy to pack brewery items, like coasters, tip trays, tokens, any non-breakable items that can be packed in suitcase, bring them. Cans, like others have said, any flats or cones are good, even off grade items. More recent craft cans go generally well--especially those released since the last convention.
70's cans are a crapshoot. If you have the USBC II--tab book, cans of a value of 10 and up might be worth bringing depending on how much room you have to bring/ship. But it is just as likely you will be taking those same cans back home. One never knows.....
80-90's aluminum--a real unknown to most collectors, unless you get a real specialist with a very specific need. most (?) collectors ignore almost all aluminum from this era. This is a vast generalization, I know, but still mostly true.
Bring a doorstop! I always forget one and always need to jerry-rig one from a towel or something.
Go to the lectures, check out the displays, attend a chapter meeting, hit the evening social entertainments, and have a beer or two. And walk the floors, up and down the trade floor aisles, and ogle the cans you will rarely ever see again in person.

Terrific advice. I would've never thought of the doorstop. And I had no idea you could buy stuff... I thought it was all trade. Thank you, Strings!stringsx24now wrote: ↑Tue Jul 31, 2018 5:00 pm Welcome to the fun.

Re: My first CANvention: Your trading advice, please!
Forgot several more things, but thought of three:
Make sure you attend the craft beer night early rather than late. They usually have a glass to keep, but sometimes run out after the initial rush.
Secondly, the BCCA business meeting on Friday almost always has a give-away item as well. You cant get one if you don't show up. Besides, the trade floor isn't open during the time of the business meeting, so you are not missing anything anyway.
If you are a member of the Rusty Bunch, go to the chapter meeting. Free pizza. Cuts down on food costs! more money to spend on beer cans.

Re: My first CANvention: Your trading advice, please!
If you're getting into town early, like Tuesday or Wednesday, there is a lot of room-to-room action going on. You see an open door, walk on in.
There are hospitality rooms- usually the host chapter has one and some of the larger chapters. Free food- usually munchies like chips and peanuts- and beer (and water or Coke if you don't drink or if you're pacing yourself or whatever). Those tend to be gathering points, especially later at night as room-to-room winds down, and are a great way to meet people and hang out talking cans or whatever.
Forgot to mention- there are bulletin boards near the elevators where people will advertise their room numbers and what they have to sell or trade. Great way to find those open rooms.
And Strings is right- bring money! You'll see beer collectibles of every shape and size for every budget.

I would make a point of getting there early - Tuesday if possible, Wednesday at the latest. Many people leave Friday and many more leave Saturday morning. Bring comfortable shoes!

Re: My first CANvention: Your trading advice, please!
When "shopping" If you see something you really like, BUY IT when you first see it. I can't tell you how many times I have hesitated and then lost out because:
1) I could never find it again with so many rooms
2) Someone else thought it was cool too and bought it before I could get back to it.
3) The room it was in was never open no matter how many times I stopped back by
Another tip if you disregard the above advice:
1) take a picture on your phone of the item then take one of the room number plate in the hall
2)Your badge holder (must wear to access BCCA areas) has a pouch in the front. Keep a piece of paper in there and a pen in the holder on back in order to write down the item, how much, and room number for those "maybe" items. DO NOT rely on your memory to know what you saw and where it was. There are so many rooms and floors that everything runs together.
Lastly, just enjoy yourself. There are tons of guys running around with the SAME collecting disfunction...lol. It is just great to share and be surrounded by like mined guys.
Buy/wear a Rusty Bunch shirt. Introduce yourself (at minimum) to everyone else wearing one (many). It gives you an intant ice breaker. Just randomly join in in conversations EVERY person is willing to chat about collecting. I am on the shy side so it took/takes me a little out of my comfort zone to just strike up or join conversations with people I don't know. Trust me, it is rewarding!

Re: My first CANvention: Your trading advice, please!
@SheperdSimmons Great to see some fellow members advice rolling in for your first planned CANvention. Hope this isn't your first and last. We'll look forward to seeing you at the show and as Danny had indicated, please stop by the Rusty Bunch tables, introduce yourself, buy some raffle tickets or try your luck at some punchboards. Hopefully we can interest you enough into becoming a fledgling RB member.
If you have any questions about the show and this great hobby we all love, never be afraid to ask any fellow collectors advice. We love to see others getting into the hobby.

Re: My first CANvention: Your trading advice, please!
Looks like I can make it Thurs-Sat but still have to finalize a couple of things. This will be my first Canvention as well so a couple of questions, are tables available if you decide late like this? I am driving so would like to throw in as much stuff as possible but not sure if I can just show up and get a table or 2 there as needed like other shows. Guessing I can no longer get in at the Hilton, at least not at the cut rate, so unless I want to open shop in the parking lot would like to know that I can get the space I need for my stuff.
Will there be alcohol available?
