State Tax Lids

One way to date cans is through the tax stamps many states required on the lids of cans and bottles. Many required the tax rate to be displayed. As the rate changed over time, this is a good way of dating the range in which a can was produced. Here is a list of the tax rates for some state:

ALABAMA:

03/22/37 to 10/1/45 - 1/2 cent
10/01/45 to 06/1/55 - 1 cent
06/01/55 to 06/1/63 - 2 cents
06/01/63 to 11/1/69 - 4 cents
11/01/69 --- 5 cents

GEORGIA:

12/13/37 to 7/30/47 - 2 cents
07/30/47 to 6/30/51 - 4 cents
6/30/51 --- 4 1/2 cents

NORTH CAROLINA:

4/28/33 to 5/1/39 - 1 cent
5/01/39 to 7/1/47 - 1 1/4 cent
7/01/47 to 7/1/55 - 2 1/2 cents
7/01/55 to 7/1/69 - 3 1/2 cents
7/01/69 --- 5 cents
8/27/37 to 7/1/50 - 21.34/Gallon

MICHIGAN:

No Michigan tax lids before 1947.
If you have a pre-war can with a Michigan tax lid, it's relidded.

Beer brewed and canned in Michigan did not require a State of Michigan Tax Stamp on the lid.

Beer brewed and canned out of the State of Michigan required a State of Michigan Tax stamp in order to be sold in Michigan. (Leon's, Wheaton's and Bob Haboush's 50's Goebels with a Michigan tax lids have an Oakland, California mandatory along the seam.)
