This was on the news media. Guy in Utah encountered Cougar while jogging in the woods. Here's the link:
Just checked the Michigan DNR site for these numbers:
BEARS:
Bear populations in Michigan have been steadily increasing since at least the 1990s (Figure 1).
An estimated 19,000 bears (including cubs) occupy approximately 35,000 square miles of
suitable bear habitat in the UP and NLP. Greater than 85 percent of the bear population resides
in the UP.
WOLVES:
Recent winter survey results point to a minimum estimated Upper Peninsula population of nearly 700 wolves. The Michigan Department of Natural Resources said today that the state’s wolf population has remained relatively stable over the past nine years, with the most recent survey completed this past winter.
COUGARS:
59 Confirmed sightings (2008 - 2020) by MI DNR.
The critters are out there...always be alert and prepared.

Almost a Darwin Award winner. But hey, he got some good footage and fame before finally picking up that rock.

She is not attacking, she is chasing him away from her cubs. The Darwin part is "oh look at those cute kitties"

I agree with that thought. I think if he would've bent down to pick up a rock, he would've become a smaller target and she just may have gone for him. They always say to become the biggest target you can be and make noise to confuse a critter.
