Desperate -Air Compressor wiring image needed
Thought perhaps the guys here are, well, the right kinda guys. I had the ground break on the power cord to my delta shopmaster 3hp compressor 135psi.. So, I bought a same gauge extension cord and ends, cut it down and wired it up. Only to discover that I took a picture of the proper wiring on a phone that died so I lost my picture. Managed to get a manual but found nothing like the insides of the power cord box. And thus far no luck on line at all...
So, does anyone have one of these and if so could you take the cover off and post a picture of the wiring? I can get pics tomorrow and post what it looks like in case anyone knows which is +/_ with the green and white wires... Figured it just would not do to get this wrong on with compressed air....
thanks, Andy

Re: Desperate -Air Compressor wiring image needed
If you cannot find the information you need, it might be worth your while to try to retrieve the picture from the phone. My wife takes a lot of pictures so I always put an extra Sim card in her phone. If her phone died, the pictures on the Sim card would be easy to retrieve. Even if your situation is not that simple, a local shop may be able to help at a reasonable cost. I would also check to see if your cell phone provider is backing up your photos to the cloud. This is a common feature they give people. Some people have the feature and don't know it. You could go to the local store for your cell phone provider and ask if you have this feature.
Focus: Cones and flats from Michigan, South Bend, and Fort Wayne. Foreign cans only if I bought them myself in the country of origin.

Re: Desperate -Air Compressor wiring image needed
If you're replacing just the plug, the black wire goes under the gold screw, the white wire goes under the silver screw and the green is the ground. If you're replacing the entire cord, the wiring would be the same in the pressure switch but there likely won't be color coded screws. The only one to worry about is the green wire going to ground. Hope this helps.

Re: Desperate -Air Compressor wiring image needed
HI Bodean Thank you! alas the black and white wires all have the slip on clip attachments - I haven't figured out exactly which tab is _ or +. the lines on the top/right go to the compressor and the power cord lines should go on the bottom/left (I think). Do these pictures help at all? thanks, Andy

Re: Desperate -Air Compressor wiring image needed
L1 AC power from the power cord
L2 AC neutral from the power cord
T1 & T2 to motor. If this is a 115vac compressor it doesn't make a difference which wire is on which terminal
Green is ground and should be connected to a screw on the case. Libel to bite if not connected.

Re: Desperate -Air Compressor wiring image needed
IT WORKS the black is neg which I figured out with some confidence from the bend in the wire to T2.
Thank you gentlemen!!!! mods could delete this thread if you wanted but I sure appreciate the help and grateful for it... Andy

Re: Desperate -Air Compressor wiring image needed
Andy, glad you got your compressor going again. Generally, the terms positive and negative are used when discussing direct current or DC power, which is what is in your car. With alternating current or A/C, which is what's in your house, the terms hot and neutral are used. In A/C current the black is hot and the white is neutral for 120v. The ground is generally green or bare. For 220v the black and white are both hot (if using typical three wire conductors - black, white, ground)
The placement of the black or white wires in A/C current doesn't affect the appliance/tool since the current oscillates 60 times per second (hertz) between the two poles, at least in the US. Shown as a sine wave on a scope. FWIW if you double the cycles per second (hertz) you can double the speed of the motor without increasing amperage. This is also what the new LED TV's/monitors are doing to increase the refresh rate on the screen - doubling the hertz. It reduces what we perceive as a flicker while watching the screen. Anyway... glad you're up and running again .

Re: Desperate -Air Compressor wiring image needed
Thanks Bodean, oooh I get it. I've been conflating Negative and Neutral like they were the same as working with DC...dooh.... In a fit of triumphant confidence I wired in a replacement for a plug I broke in my toolshed and put on a new cover too.... Incredible delusions of adequacy right over here today... Andy

Hey, you got it done and that's what's important. I just reread what I posted and realized I get carried away sometimes with my fascination with electricity... Apologies for that.

And mine would have been a lot clearer if I had added colors
L1 being black and L2 white.

Re: Desperate -Air Compressor wiring image needed
Keep rambling! cuz now I just realized I wired them backwards... do I need to switch the black and whites then or is it ok if I just did them the same... blacks on L and T 2? DOOH..... easy to pull those tabs off with a pliers... getting the ground started sucked since it moved off the hole... stuck a long pin through the cover and ground into the hole to get them all settled and replaced with the screw....

Re: Desperate -Air Compressor wiring image needed
I would move them, Neutral and Ground are at the same potential (ground).
Black definitely on L1, the motor connection doesn't care on 115vac.
A voltmeter should read 115vac (approximately) between L1 - L2 and L1 - Ground. Between L2 and Ground should be 0 volts. If you have anything above a couple of volts between L2 and Ground you have a broken connection somewhere and getting yourself between those connections would be unpleasant at best.
If you don't have a meter, a cheap one can be found at home depot

Re: Desperate -Air Compressor wiring image needed
Hiya, do have a meter so will make the switch and check it when I get some light. Was off picking up a massive collection today... We had a 20 and 26 foot pair of trucks and still filled three of our cars.... alas, not beer stuff... just one Old Milwaukee cardboard lidded case from the late 60s or so.... BUT the sheer pile of Pleistocene animal bones, teeth, etc- and casts of 3 mastodon, 1+? GIANT ground sloths (bigger than mammoth or mastodon), and a mountain of other top shelf stuff... I have a display quality cast of a rare sloth skull in the car now. The real one today would trade for more than 5 Class cans. Its staggering what we compete with scientifically because people in Japan and Germany want old stuff from America.... Thanks, Andy

Re: Desperate -Air Compressor wiring image needed
As far as any of us knows this was the last of the first generation scuba divers- making the great collections of the 60s on- that was still in private hands. And mercifully he kept pretty good notes so we can figure out what materials came from what sites.

Re: Desperate -Air Compressor wiring image needed
My niece is into paleontology and it's her primary study these days. She's spent a lot of time and money learning this field, which I have no idea about, except it's old and she's keen on it. How cool that you're into that stuff also, as it's a specialty field. Good that you had a memorable haul. When we speak of old things, the US is generally not one of the places where you expect to find old things, since we're a relatively new country compared to others, but that's only if you consider what's old as man made items.hemmings wrote: ↑Sat Oct 03, 2020 8:12 pm Hiya, do have a meter so will make the switch and check it when I get some light. Re: Desperate -Air Compressor wiring image needed
Very nice... I work primarily with a group called the Aucilla Research Institute out of Monticello, FL (30m east of Tallahassee) and that is who the two collections I am working on have been donated to. Just unloaded cast of a large cave? bear skull, the sloth skull I mentioned, and teeth of lots of different baby mastodon and older gomphothere? relatives (gotta ID them all now). Our website there is https://www.aucillaresearchinstitute.org/ and there is some good info about us and our projects.
I have my own onemanband non-profit that I just set up to do other projects more specifically related to things that interest me and/or are often farther afield than just Florida at Paleo to Pioneer www.paleotopioneer.com is my web/blog site. Feel free to give her the links and my email if she would like to talk some shop. Is she in school doing paleontology now? I'm an archaeologist that studies the people in the New World at the end of the Pleistocene so have ended up knowing an awful lot about the plants and animals of the time, especially those that went extinct.

Re: Desperate -Air Compressor wiring image needed
Thanks for the links Andy, I will be sure to pass them along to my niece. She just got her bachelors this May, I believe in earth sciences? She should be starting back this fall to work on her masters but eventually plans to get her doctorate in paleontology or similar field. When she's not in school she volunteers at a museum, so she's really into this stuff. Thanks again for the links.
