big fish...

Post by kb »

had a great vacation down in sunny FLA, bought a guide to take me fishing in the FLATS. Mosquito lagoon which is near Kenedy space center , and is famous for some type of RED fishing. MAn monster fish in 3 feet of water. First was a 20lber, then with my arms burning from a killer fight i just had enough to land this 25 lber. He took my line right down to the spool, the guide had to chase after him or he would have been swimming with 300 yrds of floss. also cuaght a 27 incher which is limit on keepers and had some filets. sea trout also were caught. had a dolphin playing near by scaring all the bait fish, a manatee was cruising. first charter i ever got, man it was worth it.

oh this was my last fish caught back home jsut a few weeks prior., just a little steelhead. love the contrast- fishing in the cold/snow versus the warm sun...ahhhhh

soon we will be on LAke Erie for smallies.... now just gota do some dumping.

Hey KB, maybe next time you'll land yourself a Marlin -- Ale or Beer, either one works.

We estimate that Tarpon around 150lbs and was caught in Boca Grande Pass. It was a blast to catch and it kicked my ***. In fact the rod broke while I was fighting it, so it was especially nice to get it to the boat.

The Tarpon show is the PTTS, Professional Tarpon Tournament Series, and is filmed in Boca Grande Pass. I have a few buddies who fish the PTTS. This years tournament starts the weekend of May 17th and runs for 6 Saturdays. I would love to fish in it, but I still have a lot to learn before I get that invite. But you may see my boat in the background watching the action.

My first trip down to Boca Grande will be next Thursday. Can't wait to jump my first Tarpon of the year.

Heres a few more pictures from last year.

KB, when you were talking about RED fishing, I thought you were referring to your lack of sunscreen.....OUCH!
Currently in a collecting funk. Waiting for the bug to bite again to get back into collecting some type of cans, on a small, affordable level.

WHERE ARE YOU LOCATED? I have a condo between Sanabel + Ft. Myers Beach. I'm boatless in Florida, so I fish for snook + reds from the pier @ Sanabel. Most are too big to keep, but a lot of fun. Only fished the pass once for tarpon - no luck. Did good there w/ grouper and big snapper one year. 2 footers! My favorite was fishing the creeks in pine island for 'baby' tarpon on light tackle. Only time I ever landed a tarpon.... great fun (10-35 lbs. on bass-sized swimbaits).

Snook is one of the best eating fish I have ever had. I do miss salt water fishing. A brook trout tastes great and puts up a resistance, but nothing like a screaming reel with a big fish on the line.

Snook is a good eating fish. Unfortunately the freeze we had last year killed millions of them and they are closed on the West Coast of Florida. I think the East Coast was opened for a short time, but is closed now. They will decide at the end of the Summer if they will open them again. Hope so.

I was in Bradenton last Feb. visiting a friend 2 days after the freeze had hit. We went to De Soto State Park and over to Amelia Is., the beaches were littered with fish of all kinds and size. I hadn't read of how the freeze impacted various species of game fish/sport fish this year. What is the forecast for the recovery of the game fish?
Wish I had know you were in Sarasota, I'd have looked you up and we could have gone to Clancy's for a beer.

I was at the Sanabel pier August 1st 2010. season was closed, but the snook were so numerous, it was incredible fishing. Mostly 'little' 2 footers, but still great fun. 99 degrees at midnight, no wind and clouds of mosquitoes.. absolutely miserable!
I'd love to 'hook' up with somebody when I go down. No plans to go yet for this year.
If you guys are ever up near Erie, Pa. - we can hook-up and catch some lil bass and trout. Now is prime-time!
I am trying to get together w/ KB in the next couple weeks for a NY trip (Chautauqua)

The Snook have been moving from their winter spots to the beach and staging for spawning. Reports look good so far with tons of little males in the 20" to 24" range and decent number of the bigger females up to 40". No reports of the big girls, 40"+, but it is really early and they might just be laying low. My gut is they will be closed again this year and reopen next spring.

Last time I was at Chautauqua in May, I only caught 3 Largemouth over 5 pounds, but 8 smallmouth over 5 (2 over 6#). I only want to go there to go with KB. Much better fishing at Erie for bass - 4 fish limit + it takes 23 pounds to win a bass tournament at Erie Pa. (all smallmouth). Better fishing than that now at Erie because tourney fishing does'nt start till mid-June.

Hey Krup, did you put those Chataqua fish on a scale or are those estimated weights? Chataqua isn't generally known as a trophy fishery but if it's producing fish of that size I may have to give it a second chance. I gave up on that lake years ago. I pretty much stick to the Niagara River these days, lots and lots of fish but not the size like you get in the lake. I've had many many 50+ keeper days out there but usually only break the 4# mark a few times a season and have yet to break 5# out there. 3 pounders are fairly common but 4's are tough.

I weigh all my big fish on the hand-held digital scales. The big smallmouth have always been there. If you follow FLW, you've seen Dave Lefebre. We were so glad when he went pro and stopped fishing our local circuits! He would weigh-in 5 fish bags of 25# + at Chaut. every time he fished a tourney (1990's - 2003ish). (all smallys + the 2nd place finisher would have 12-15# with all largemouth) It was like he was fishing a different lake. More people have figured them out now, but still hard to catch outside of the nesting season which starts right now to July. They are caught on the edge of the weeds on off-shore structure. Not easy to catch even when you locate them and get them to bite..... (leave your spinning tackle with 10 lb test at home!). Erie is even better! My buddy weighed in 17 lbs (4 fish limit tournament at Erie) - he only took 3rd place.... but he only had 3 fish! his lunker was 7.6# . He broke a five pounder off at the boat which would have won it for him ($3.5K). You need a 6 to take lunker at Erie... Chaut. you can win lunker $ with a 5.

I've put some monster stringers together on Erie before but I don't fish it very often. I've become a real one trick pony as far as fishing technique goes, I like casting in shallow water. The lake (at least at this end) is mostly jigging or live bait in deeper water and just isn't my thing. For the most part we'll go out on the river and hit 20+ (and a lot of times 50+) fish in the 2 pound range with a handful of 3's and a half dozen or so 4's per season. I do best in June and late Sept/early Oct. Rustmongers charter service is always available if you want to come up some time. Free room and board, fridge full of beer, walls full of dumpers, and a river full of fish. I weigh all my better fish too, nothing worse than hearing about all these five pounders and then seeing pictures of 14 inch fish. I didn't realize Chataqua was putting out such nice fish, I haven't been there in almost 20 years.

which river? do you fish from a boat? How far are you from Oneida?
I extend the same offer to you, but we would have to meet at Chautauqua (It is 2hrs. north of me - inbetween you + I). We could get a campsite and use my boat... All you would need to bring would be your license + lots of food... (I don't drink beer). One 'problem' with the lake last year was a population explosion of yellow perch. You literally catch one on every cast. The fish wardens were running nets to catch and kill them last October. They should be keeper size this year.... mostly 6-8" last year but there were a few big ones.

Krup, I fish the upper Niagara River from my boat. Might take you up on that sometime to meet at Chataqua. Used to fish that quite a bit until I discovered the Finger Lakes region in Central NY and never looked back. Now with the kids my time is limited to mostly morning trips so I can't get there anymore and just stick to the river. Check out this link, it's a fishing diary I kept on the RB site last spring. Shows pretty well what I do.

Here's my rig. Chillin' The Most. All set up for fishing with bow mount trolling motor and fishing platform. Works out great, just pull it out for a day of family fun and put it in for instant bass boat. Been a good set up for me.

1st day of walleye season tomorrow. We are going to kill a couple long-beards in the morning, kill a few walleye in the afternoon, serve up a surf+turf barbecue in the evening, and never venture more than a couple miles from my house (beer-can heaven).
I don't have a picture of my main boat. I'll get one taken and post it.
When were you thinking of extending your invite for fishing in your river? My boy and I would come up. Doesn't have to be a weekend for us. Really interested in the pike!

Was out today pre-fishing for a tournament on Saturday. Couldn't find the Snook we need, but did find some nice over slot Redfish. Here is a 10lb 30" Redfish I stuck today. Sure hope they are in the same place tomorrow.

I don't have a picture of my main boat. I'll get one taken and post it.
When were you thinking of extending your invite for fishing in your river? My boy and I would come up. Doesn't have to be a weekend for us. Really interested in the pike!
No Turkeys but a couple nice walleye and this monster of the deep on 6 lb. test. (I'm leaving him home next trip - his walleye were bigger than mine too)

Well I didn't do so good in my Tournament last Saturday, but last night was off the hook. Four of us went down to Boca Grande for a night Tarpon trip. We jumped 9 Tarpon and got 4 to the boat. I went 1 for 3 with this nice 150lb Tarpon. She was a real fat fish. Way to start the season.

That is soooo cool Chuck, I'd love to do that someday. From what I've seen on TV I think I'd really really like the snook fishing too, looks a lot like bass fishing but bigger!

Krup, I'd think the best time to come up would be mid/late June or towards the end of September. Early season is usually a lot of smaller largemouth (50+ a day a lot of times) with some decent smallies and a few pike thrown in for good measure. Fall is usually when we get the bigger smallies. All depends on what you want to catch. Spring is about fun. Topwaters, numbers and variety, Fall is all about big smallmouth. Nothing huge mind you but you can usually get into several 3#+ a day with a chance at a 4# or better. On ultralight tackle it's a blast.
