Kuebler Bock J Spout

#1

Post by Conehead »

Do all the Kuebler Bock J Spouts have "Union Made" under the goat?

The regular Kuebler Pilsener with "Union Made" on the front are very scarce, I think 3 known?
Do you think there is a correlation between the two? Or Kuebler just happened to run the Bocks right when they made this short run label design change?

Jim, I can't say for sure, but I've owned three examples. One was the faded and re-darkened example in the USBC. I think Marc still has it. Couldn't say for sure with it, but the other two were definitely Union Made examples. MRC, please weight in!
The story I've always heard was that a nasty strike caused the brewery to black out the Union Made on the Pilseners. I can only guess the Bocks were timed just right, coupled with being a smaller batch of cans that may have simply not been worth the trouble to black out.
I'd love to know If anyone knows the timing of the strike, and if I fact there was one.

All of the Bocks I've seen are Union Made or indistibguishable.

I suspect that the Beer variation is overlooked in dumps.

Conehead has once again hit me with yet another variation I did not know about! I knew about the Beer versions with and without the union symbol but not the union made words. Perhaps that is the reason for the Beer version with the ribbon....

Phil, the ribbon version has Union Made under the ribbon. I've tried several times to remove the ribbon, with no luck.

Perhaps Jim (Hall) can refresh my memory . . . I think he dug three examples of that Beer variation. I got one from Robby Powell when he sold his collection, and I assume it's from Jim's find.

I've tried removing the ribbon several times with no luck also.

Marc, you are correct. I dug 3 examples in the early 80's in western PA. The dump contained the silhouette as well as the with and without ribbon variation (quite a lot of all three by the way), and only three with "union label".

I've looked for more of the union label and have never seen another. There probably are more but that was definitely a short run variation.

Krupnik and I probably hit the largest single dump of Kuebler PIlseners ever found, down near Dumphries VA. Very near the dump where I found 2 cases of Tru-Blu 10 oz Js. We literally hauled off two truckloads of those cans, and we never saw a Union Made in the bunch. Many were wipe off clean.

John, can you send me a copy of that photo? If only that Ranger that stopped by while we were taking a break had ever walked out behind that tree we were leaned up against........... we'd be getting out about now!

I went back 6 years ago and could not find any evidence of that dump except for a J-spout on a branch of a tree. That is a digital photo from an original photo. (I have more pics from that dump!) But they are still plain photos. Old Dutch beer LPs .. Brauhouse flats. National ale lp. tru blu ale qts. ... Wish we had photos from Cooper's!
