Re: Evapo-Rust Test
I'm finding it is really hard on some of my crowntainers. Some turn out of and some turn black. It is not the best for every can. You really need to pick your battles with this stuff. But I do say I've had some really good results on some cans. Just me experience. One thing I did notice but need to confirm. When the solution is dirty, try leaving it out in cold weather. Not freezing but cold. I be been soaking my cans in jars and when I left the dirty Evaporust outside, the solution cleared up.. It could have been a fluke, but worth trying to repeat

Re: Evapo-Rust Test
Do you think it did just as good as the oxalic...or have you used it before? I think it did pretty good! I'm experimenting with a crusty seam on a 7up can right now, its been taking days though... but the garage is not at room temp.

Re: Evapo-Rust Test
It works better in temps above 70. I need to work with it some more in different cans. For some reason it really eats at the finish of silver crowntainers. I've noticed if the can stayed in too long, the painted label of the crowntainers will rub off. But I need to see how it works on enamel. It's definitely not harmless to your cans. It does eat surface rust off pretty well, but the rusty barnacles don't get affected too much. Again, I'm still playing with it to find the best scenarios for applying it

Re: Evapo-Rust Test
I actually have an Old Fashioned Crowntainer soaking right now. It's pretty pocked and one side is almost unreadable so we should get a good read on enamel Crowntainers tomorrow.

Re: Evapo-Rust Test
I had a Hohenadel come out great but I just soaked a Greisedick and I wish I hadn't soaked it. Parts of it turned black.

Ahh man sorry to hear that ...but it is experimental...are you going to post a picture anyways just to show what can happen?Cantageous wrote:I had a Hohenadel come out great but I just soaked a Greisedick and I wish I hadn't soaked it. Parts of it turned black.
I wonder if the Evapo-Rust will attack all red paint..I suppose if it's already faded or oxidized then the chance are good it will.

Re: Evapo-Rust Test
Well this is my results, first can I've ever done!, with my 7up can that had a pretty crusty seam. I did not do a complete submerge but rather made up a tray and soaked the seam, then did the lids. Process was 2-3 days (cool garage) with some over night soaks and using a soft tooth brush to agitate the seam. Pretty hard to expect much on the chrome lids but it made a bit of a difference. On the seam it left some good size holes but I kind of expected that..I mean it did remove the rust no doubt!...hard to say if the green stripes faded much on along the seam..maybe a bit . When it dried it left the seam pretty dark with rust color in the dimples...I assume that is the solder?....I took some metal polish on a tooth brush to the seam and buffed it up then rinsed with water and used a hair dryer on it.

Re: Evapo-Rust Test
It took away the rust on this, especially on the back side, but there is not doubt that the yellow was faded and the red was stripped almost completely away. Disappointing results on that point. I hate fade more than rust.

Re: Evapo-Rust Test
Is the paint different on these crowntainers than say that cone that syracusebeer did at the beginning? I'm doing a early 70's diet 7up red can so we shall see what happens!
But I think the paint is coated on them or something.Would love to try my Lucky Strike but am afraid the the yellow fading.

Re: Evapo-Rust Test
Here is a early 70's Pepsi with an aluminum lid. Nothing to dramatic here but it cleaned it up enough to when I don't mind having it on the shelf till a better one comes along. And it's so much cleaner to handle. No fade on the red because of the coating I suppose.
This is the diet Pepsi FT came up noticeable improvement the lids and seam were pretty toasty!..no fade... It does seem to leave some of the rust converted to black? But as a way to clean up some lids and seams with no fuss of sourcing out the acid and then mixing, I'm happy so far, I guess you can't expect miracles but this is a great alternative........ps click to supersize.
