Alternatives to soaking in Oxalic or Citric acid
I've read about some alternative rust removal products like Flitz, but haven't tried anything until today. I found some cans over the weekend and ordered some Oxalic for the soaking. In the mean time, I felt like playing around on some common cans . I have some Goof Off laying around and thought it might be ok to try on some light rust. I will also try on a "mystery" can , but this method is really intended for lightly rusted cans here is a before picture of the donor victim
And the magical Jim Jones Cool-Aid product
Now, this is for light surface rust. I don't expect any miracles. I'm just looking for something to spot treat other cans I have that don't need to be totally soaked.
I'll post the after in just a bit... Stay tuned

Ok,
Not bad for a spray on and wipe off treatment. I will do another can to test. Here is the after shot of the Budweiser

And the other side
Here is then next victim.
Oxalic is still my go to for rust, but some cans I have, especially crowntainers, are too sensitive for an acid bath. This might be a good alternative, I just need to experiment more.

WD-40 has been discussed on this site, I'm sure somebody here will tell you how to use it.

When you use WD40 on a can, it stops the oxidation process that has already started. It also brightens the colors. I spray a very light coating on the can and wrap it in a towel and pat dry. That leaves a light coating on the can and you cant even tell the can is "oily" looking.

I just my acid today and I already fudges up one crowntainer. The crowntainer I did use the goof off on came out better. With crowntainers yiu have to be so cautious. I'm using the jar method so I can see if the can is getting over cooked, I'm gonna do a couple semi common 8os flats to see if they gat better. I will try the WD40 methods tonight. That sounds good. I also have PB Blaster. That stuff works great on removing old rusty nuts off bolts.. Do yiu think that would be too aggressive ?

I'm sure a degreaser would get it off. Something easy like Dawn, I'm not sure. But the good stuff will.Canadacan wrote:Did not someone say once WD 40 is on it's permanent?

Hi,
Thanks for posting this about Goof Off! Have you had any more experiences that you could share with Goof Off? Also, how long did you leave it on the cans, before you wiped it off? Thanks!

Re: Alternatives to soaking in Oxalic or Citric acid
I've never tried Goof-Off, maybe I'll do a test this fall on some cans I won't care if they end up ruined. (PS, welcome to the forum)
