Candidates for First Time Ever Oxalic Acid Cleaning

#1

Post by lschenone »

I recently picked up these three cans...two from a craigslist ad and another from a fellow RB'er. I have read the posts on performing an Oxalic Acid bath. Are these good candidates for a bath? I don't collect these grades of cans, but I am attending the upcoming Gateway fall show in Belleville and some of my friends may be interested in these cans. I would like to try to give them a bath first. Any suggestions?

BTW, how does one dispose of spent bath water? I read where you add baking soda, but how much?

Thanks,
Larry

Add 1 teasoon full twice, works for me. I think those cans are almost too clean for the bath, you should find something rustier

Thanks for the advice. I was planning to use a weak solution...maximum of 1 tablespoon added to a gallon of water. But I won't start this until I can figure out a safe way to dispose the spent acid. The oxalic acid I have is in a sealed container and quite old. It might of lost some of its potency.

"It might of [sic] lost some of its potency."

It hasn't. It's a very stable compound.

Neutralize the solution to pH 7 with baking soda, then you can drain dispose it.
