IRTP Van Merritt Cone Top Variation

#1

Post by Conehead »

Here's a neat variation that some may not be aware of.

The USBC reference number is 188-13.

If you don't see the variation it right away, just check the mandatory.

Can #1 states "Brewed and Bottled by" (this is #188-13)
Can #2 states "Brewed and Filled by" (not pictured)

My guess would be that the brewer just started canning and used the existing bottle label design. Then someone noticed the wording and said "hey, these aren't bottles" and had the label changed. I don't really think one variation is harder than the other, but I did have a hard time finding the "Brewed and Bottled by" in off grade condition. I passed on quite a few on grade ones until this dumper came along.

There are some other cones out there that use "Brewed and Bottled by", but I don't know of any others that had both "bottled" and "filled/canned" on the exact same label. Anyone know of any others? There are at least two that are very close but they are slightly more than just a mandatory change. Anyone know what they are?

Thanks, that is an interesting variation, it is sort of "bottled" since it is a cone, right? ;) Never had one of those cones but one of many high pros in Wisconsin I want to get, I have been distracted by other interests lately but collecting Wisconsin cones is a another project I want to work on. I think I counted 22 or 23 breweries in Wisconsin that produced cones. I was back in collecting for a while before realizing these Van Merritt's were from Wisconsin, looking it up it had a short run only open from 1953-55.

Those dates don't jive with the IRTP statement.
