Oltimer cone

#1

Post by rusteditor »

I'm curious... the only Oltimer cones I see are always on grade. I can't recall seeing any dumpers. Has anyone ever dumped this cone?

This sounds kind of weird talking about an off grade cone, but..... sweet! Did you dump it?

I've only dug two of them back in the 70s, and both were at Meramec State Park in Missouri, about 100 mines west of Belleville, Illinois where they were brewed. My brother Rick found one around 1982 in North Carolina at a pull off on the side of an old US highway. Probably a tourist can.

My Oltimer story is that I got a box with about 9 full cans that were found in Belleville, stashed at a welding shop. The gold was tarnished on all of the cans, and there was the typical damage you get from some of the cans leaking. I had to pour one out into a clear glass, and was surprised at the clarity and the nice foamy head. Yes, I had to take a sip. As I recall, the metallic taste made me a spitter and not a swallower.

Here is a scan of an old photo with the best six cans. Gold tarnished, but they were pretty decent overall. How they sat hidden away unopened for 50 plus years is hard to imagine.

While we are on the topic of Oltimers, I have a question. I am curious if anybody has (or has seen) Otimer IRTP 178/16 with IRTP at the seam instead of on the front label. My search for this possible variation has been fruitless. So I'm wondering if the can even exists. Who knows? Matt
