Solid first post Jim Bob!

Good luck with these - I have had one toleware find - a Pickwick Ale Quart that did not quite let go of all its paint. I believe I sold it to someone who got it cleaned all the way. I bet if I filled with hot water that would have helped.

Fill cone with extremely hot water, let the can warm up. Then submerge the can up to the cone in acetone. Within a few minutes the paint should just fall right off. Don't brush the can when the paint comes off. The beer label will also be fragile. Use a toothpick to pick off the remaining spots of paint. You may have to dip the can a couple of times. Once in a while you get one that the top coat won't come off but most will.

Here's another I did a while back.

I have not had much success using acetone with crowntainers. I've always had to rub em. Maybe someone else can provide more input.

It works on white enameled crowntainers but Silver Crowntainers are another story. I have not been able to do any of these but I would assume if the exterior paint is latex it would come right off. The only thing to do is give it a try and post the results here.

I have provided insight on finding and buying these cans somewhere else on the RB page but I'll put my comments in here again. I would not spend big bucks on these cans as you never know who, or when, they were created. I purchase one on ebay years ago for $25 and it turned out to be a rusted northern can underneath, courtesy of Mr. Shepard. Also you don't know what kind of paint is on the outside, enameled spray paint will not always come off. I have had several cans that were created that way. If you find them in a flea market or antique store cheap, then jump on them. That way you are not out money. But of course it's your decision.

Found this one at a antique mall in Florida last week while on vacation - Odd that the cone is not painted, and the decal was lined up with the seam. Hoping for a good Florida cone underneath, need to get some Acetone and will dip sometime in the next week....

Been a shortage of 'after' photos here so I did not want to add to that -

The Florida laundry sprinkler is a Red Top Ale - IRTP version.

Still some stubborn green paint on the seam and back side but I did not want to risk the red on the front fading. Should I wait a few days before soaking in fresh acetone, so the factory paint re-hardens? The important part is clean, so I may just leave it as is.

I few more comments on this process. Acetone will NOT FADE PAINT. Acetone will also NOT Remove the baked on label unless the underlying label is damaged. If the repainted can had scratches, lost paint or chips before it was painted then the overpaint is probably touching metal and may not come off without a toothpick. Also use a toothpick to get the under the rim paint and paint on the seam. Finally, the paint will not always come off of the conetop or the concave bottom. How you remove that is up to you, but i use a wire brush on a grinding wheel. Be sure to cover the label and practice on old cans. I just did another one, turned out to be a Cardinal, but upgraded my shelf can. $10 at a flea market.
