Re: State tax lids
I'd enjoy seeing a State Tax Lid forum and a seperate Vanity Lid forum if there isn't one already. It would make for great reference points and historical tracking data.

Interesting....my post got pushed through a wormhole and into the new forum as I was typing away..........I'd still be interested in seeing all the other Vanity Lids (not always tax related) compiled by state somewhere.......

Re: State tax lids
The Alabama lids are cool. Now if I could only find one of those softtops indoor and bottom-opened! (Not likely.)
Here's a can that was on eBay and didn't sell, but thankfully the owner was a new member of our forum here. We struck a deal and now this guy sits on my shelf. I'd heard that on at least one occasion, a few of these were actually dumped in Michigan; regardless, it's a mighty weird day when you're finding Old Germans there. At least it validates this can, and makes the tax lid that much more piquant!

YES, I dumped some nice dumpers of those Old Germans here in Michigan about 5 years ago. I believed I posted a pic of them in here then. I think me & Chris T. had a conversation about them. LEON.

Re: State tax lids
This top was on a Gluek flat top (USBC 70-09) from Minneapolis, MN. Best example that I've found of a top specifically from Minnesota.

Re: State tax lids
I have a little time on my hands so have decided to seek out the forgotten forums of the Rusty Bunch site. I see the Minnesota can, while interesting, is not really a tax stamp. But it does bring up a question I have; how many states required alcohol contents? I figure any can with alcohol contents from the midwest was sold in Minnesota, since that is the only state I know of in the area that required that on the cans. I know Montana and Washington also seem to have had this requirement at some point, how many other states had this? Maybe we (and by we I mean Dan Bora) should add a sub-forum for alcohol statement cans.

The Oklahoma stamps are the same as Minnesota. Not really a tax stamp, but a way to show the beer inside had an alcohol content that exceeded 3.2%.

Re: State tax lids
Hi Mike,
My point about the Minnesota can was that the "Minnesota" part of the lid seems to be totally unrelated to the alcohol content. Virtually all the cans I presume were sold in Minnesota do not have "Minnesota" at all on the lid, only the alcohol content.
So are you saying there are Oklahoma-sold cans from the "contents" era that have contents on the lid but do not say "Oklahoma"? Or just that they don't actually say "tax" anywhere? Do they all say "Oklahoma"? Inquiring minds (or maybe only my mind) want to know.

Re: State tax lids
From my collection of Olde Frothingslosh cans with some form of state marker on the lids/bottoms, I have identified at least 26 and know there are more. Like the 6 pink ones from Oklahoma, which I have 2 different.
Here's a couple pics of 9 cans.
Top row of 2: Strong with no state listed - anybody have a guess at what state? and a Not more than 3.2% alc by weight with no state listed - could that be from Oklahoma?
Middle row of 4: Oklahoma - all 4 have the 3.2% by weight statement
Bottom row of 3: to show how Florida, Georgia, and West Virginia marked their bottoms.
Does anyone else have any Olde Frothingslosh cans from any other state?
Thanks, Baxter

Re: State tax lids
Eric -
3.2% beer that was sold in Oklahoma did not have any stamp. However, full strength beer, usually from breweries that did not make lower strength beer, were stamped "Oklahoma" on the lid. After the introduction of tab top cans, the "Oklahoma" was moved to the bottom lid. There was no mention of tax or percentage, just the word "Oklahoma".
I have found some cans from the late 70's / early 80's (Pearl and Falstaff come to mind) that have engraved lids that say "Oklahoma alcoholic content in excess of 3.2%.

Re: State tax lids
Mike or anyone else, can you post a pic of an Olde Frothingslosh can with just Oklahoma on the bottom? Did any come that way? Are there any Olde Frothingslosh cans with a state other than Oklahoma, Florida, Georgia, or West Virginia?

Re: State tax lids
Mike,
Do you know if the stamp was for tax purposes? I think some states (Ohio I think was one, but I am not positive) had different age limits to buy beer. So you could buy up to 3.2% if you were 18, but couldn't buy the stronger stuff until 21.
Baxter,
I don't collect pull-tabs so I wouldn't know if there are others. When I was looking at this forum I wasn't even thinking about the non-flattop cans, since Michigan stopped the tax stamp well before pull-tabs as far as I know. It would be interesting to know the dates when each state started and stopped using tax stamps. Any experts out there?

Re: State tax lids
Eric, While I'm not an expert on the years states started/ended with stamps on pull tabs, I can offer what I see on my Olde Frothingslosh cans, by year.
1969 Brown - I have W VA brown
1974 Brown, Red, Blue, Orange - I have FL brown, GA red, blue, orange
1975 Yellow, Gray, Maroon - I have W VA gray
1976 White ss, white crimp
1977 labels - I have FL
1978 3 stars cans - I have FL brown/blue points
1979 2nd 3 stars cans
1980 6 pink cans - I have FL pump, ballet, trolley, car, OK ribbon, pump
1981 4 Sir Reggie - I have FL blue, GA blue, green, OK green, maroon
So from my modest group of pull tabs, with state markings on lids/bottoms: W VA 1969-1975, FL 1974-1981, GA 1974-1981, OK 1980-1981. Pics in post 47 above.
Can some other tab collectors offer observations from their collections, by can, by year?
