PROHIBITION LABELS

#1

Post by CMD »

I just recently got these prohibition Malt Syrup/Extract labels and now have over 100 ! Some of these graphics are off the hook. Of course my favorite is the Eastside. The Tumwater has to have an Olympia connection. The Chesto is Chief Oshkosh. The Matterhorn is for Matterhorn Products Lake Michigan Building Chicago W T F ??? The couple on Best Maid label look like they are ready to do the deed??!!

It all depends on whether you're buying or selling.

Here's the one that started it all and its tin litho, not paper label ( I only have a half dozen tin litho).I'm going to say this is like 1925 (the labels I posted are 1929,1930). I think this Sampson is a little more graphic than the Sampson ale OI can ! Kotto, coincidentally it is from St Louis. I only have 2 others from St Louis.... Bud, very common and a Falstaff , never seen another.

cheers

Dan

Yeah, I had like 4 or 5 Different Pabst Blue Ribbon Malt Syrup containers. All full I think, One bulged & sprung a leak. Leak went on for months without me noticing. Nasty black gooey glue like substance, like roofing tar. Ruined the cans next to it & ran down my bookcase ruining many books & old brewering mags & ads. Bummer. LEON.

If I had seen these I would have immediately thought they were reproduction or at minimum old stock labels glued on newer style tins. Since all labels appear
to be just about flawless and even the rims of the cans shine like they were just manufactured yesterday. Think a group of 30's OI's that are found and just this
flawless with shiny rims on the entire group.

If these are all original and close to 100 years old in this condition, this has to be one of the top finds of these type cans ever. :smt026

None are reproductions, the labels in the first picture came as NOS , some of the labels are embossed and none have the dot matrix pattern one would see on modern printers. I use one quart paint cans to wrap the labels around for display. I made a mistake , when I first starting saving these, as only saving labels that were on original tins, not just labels by themselves, that would be like collecting just full cans. So I missed out on a bunch or rare ones. You can see in the later pictures , tins with their labels on them show their age more probably the glue used to secure the labels led to their deterioration. Best guess is there could be 1000s of different malt syrup labels

cheers

Dan
