Anybody ever hear of Monarch Beer?
Here's a picture from 1946 of an ad painted on the side of a Chicago building for Monarch Beer:

Wimpy - Coast to Coast - The Glorified Hamburger
- was a very small chain that I have been told only had a
few locations in Chicago, in the 1940's, & 1950's.
My father ate at one in the 1950's.
Trademarkia . com - LegalForce shows first use of name In 1934
Love these old pics - to the left of Wimpy is a banner or
neon sign entitled BLUE NOTE. - perhaps a classy,
or seedy nightclub?

Re: Blatz sign, downtown Chicago, 1955
OK, 1955 the cars seem to match the time period BUT what about the large digital clock? I grew up in the 50's and sure don't remember large or small digital clocks! What gives? I just read that the digital clock was invented in 1956 but didn't get popular until the 1970's when the price of microchips and LED's became cheaply available.

It could be later in the decade, but that's the year the guy posting it on his web site used.

Re: Blatz sign, downtown Chicago, 1955
Remember, Times Square in New York had a "digital" ticker tape style news report made out of light bulbs during World War II. I'm sure by the late 50's, these clocks were available, but expensive. When did scoreboards in baseball stadiums replace their analog Longines clocks with digital? I would bet around this same time.
According to the website, "Sport Field Management" http://www.sportsfieldmanagementmagazin ... -6663.aspx an all-digital scoreboard was installed at Yankee Stadium in 1950 that included a digital clock.
You can see the analog clock used to be at the top in the older scoreboard.
Judging by the amount of traffic, the time of day and number of cars in the parking lot under the Coke sign, I'm guessing the photo was taken on a Sunday.
