I dug this in a pre war dump in the ADKs yrs back, its a clear thick piece of glass. The Schlitz had some coloring to it still. Not sure what it would have been a part of. The dump was from a gas station, general store, and funny how we found nothing else at all related to Schlitz???

I first saw these about ten years ago when I visited a guy to buy some cans.We met and talked in his garage, then he took me to the basement where he had his collection of HUNDREDS of tap knobs. Most were recent vintage, figural tappers from Miller Lite and Bud, but there were 3-4 ball tap knobs he'd talked the brewmaster out of from Walter's in Eau Claire. I ended up buying a 1940's neon from his back room too. It needed repair, but I could see the potential and the price was right. He brought out a Schlitz self framed tin sign after that, and told me his son had found it years ago in an abandoned bar that was torn down shortly after he rescued it. He continued showing me a handful of items his son found that day, all from the same era.I tried my best to see
if they were for sale, but he said I'd have to talk with his son, and left it at that.

I started my card campaign, mailing a handmade card every year or so, and eventually found his son's address, to mail a card or two his way. This past week, after 3-4 years, I got the call from Randy.

As a bouncer at Hotel Dibbo's in Hudson, WI., Randy lived next door to an old guy who owned an abandoned combination hotel/bar, with the bar in the basement, that had a door that opened to the Mississippi river side so patrons could enter from the docks.Like his Dad, Randy collected beer stuff, mainly openers and cans, and the owner of this place brought him a few small items over the years. This building never re-opened after prohibition. But one day, for whatever the reason,he said "go downstairs and check it out" Randy said it was dark and damp, with the bar warped and some of the ceiling coming down. He gathered these items in the semi-darkness before the old guy yelled downstairs "thats enough" so he emerged with these signs.

All from this bar, who obviously served Schlitz, along with the stock president's tray from Hudson, which I've only seen in Herb Haydock's first breweriana book. The round Schlitz sign needs to have the faceted jewels replaced around the border, but to have this little "time capsule from the teens" is pretty cool.

Time to get these breweriana archive pages to have some updates. So I walked around the house to find some items that were not yet on the Schlitz thread.

First some Schlitz Old Milwaukee brand...

Back in the beginning of the 20th century, Schlitz (and other breweries) had "tied houses" - bars that were linked to a specific brewery. This web page has some great photos.

I saw this hanging off the side of a building here in southern Ontario... it appears to be made of wood and looks about four to five feet long......not sure if it's a piece of folk art or the real thing,
