Nice surprise while clearing timber!

I am at my family's place up in Rangeley Maine for a couple of weeks to get the camp opened up. It used to be an old loggers camp that dates from around 1850. We have owned it since 1937. Anyways, I was out back in the woods cutting down some trees that had fallen durring the winter. After dropping a tree and starting to cut it up, I saw some rusted soup type cans poking up through the compacted pine needles. Of course I decided to take a quick look before getting back to work. I was encouraged when I found a little rusted out orange juice can that was opened with a church key. After rooting through some broken glass' I pulled out a gold Budweiser in prety solid shape! For most of you it would be no big deal, but for me it was HUGE I was so excited I went running around in circles in the back yard with my armes raised over my head in a victory dance. Thank goodness nobody else was home to se it! It is the first "REAL" can I have found. I have only ben on one dumping excursion to date (With paul Letostack, Alan Miller, and my Wife after the Augusta show) and we found a few realy beat up flats but nothing of real note. The best thing is that is was right on MY OWN PROPERTY! I had never considered dumping before I joined the site last year. Now I can't wait to hook up with some experienced guys and give it a whirl. I had hoped that our property would have something to share as I have seen some debree back in the woods previously.
It is quite possible that the can was drunk by my Great Grandfather soon after he bought the property. The possible connection to my long deceaced family members is a little overwelming....... I don't have a metal detector yet, but you can be sure I will have one with me when I come back up next year.

Do you think it is a coincidence that I was wearing my Rusty Bunch shirt while cutting down trees that led me to my discovery............

Our own Longopener would be the guy to check with on this, but that can has a toothed seam and may date it more to the war era. If it's an Others Pending can, it might be 1941-42ish...or if it's three patents, possibly even later 40s.

And now for the crucial part: metal detect that spot and everything within a 50 yard radius! Hell, make it 100 yards...that little batch of cans is telling you something really important about the area. Could be a scatter dump or even a shallow garbage pit. The fact that you found several cans in one spot makes it almost certain there are others around.

I was wondering about the toothed seam!?! I hope that means something in dating it. There are several places on the proprety where there is debree on the surface. Broken porcelain chamber pots, old broken glass, some rusted tin, ect. It is bound to have more cans.
It would be prety cool to be able to date it to a specific year. I will have to clean it up to be able to see which one it is. I bought a tub of oxilic acid but havent tried it yet. Rustmonger sent me some rusty ones to practice with before I attempt to clean this one!

I was born in Maine, so the Maine dumping stories are nice to hear. I was never of dumping age there, but take the advice of these guys: hit that area hard. The thing about long-time "private property" as opposed to a community dumping site is you get a real personal look at one family and their tastes and brand loyalties. You are digging through your family's past here, and that's extra cool!

The 5-toothed seams came on America Can Co. cans starting in about 1944 or so on the OD's and 1947 on the domestic labels. "Probably" not past mid-1948.

Just an estimated guess on these dates and there are of course exceptions.

Thanks for the info. It is prety cool to more closely date it. we have records up here of everyone that visited the camp written by my Grandfather on the wall in the bathroom but it only dates as far back as 1951. I guess it will remain a mystery which one of my relatives probably drank it.
