Thoughts....well....if it is an indoor/on-grade example....we may have something. Lilek documents a lighter background variation on page 757 but guesses it is really just a faded 756. Similar single color fading is blamed on the #735 Rheinlander.....and just last week.....two of Rusty Bunche's finest at Brookdale were arguing (somewhat convincingly) that the yellow GB #312 in my tote is just a faded variation of #311 or #313.josh wrote:Mike, The Sicks with the white(ish) label is interesting. I assume its the Salem can. Is it indoor? Post pic if you get a chance. I've always believed that color is a variation of the Oregon can. Thoughts? Josh.

The Sicks in question is not a indoor can but I'm sure the white color is true. I'll take some pics in the morning and post latter. I will do all three of cans side by side to compare as all are in about the same condition. My one on grade Sicks is WF and no top as are most I've seen. Now I'm in for it as it has no rust. Oh well guess I will have to down grade again. Out for now.

I have asked this question before with little response. I think the white is a legitimate variation as well. I base this in part by a find I made last year. A small pit turned up two of the Sicks' with a white background and two red B Acme Steingirls. I found it interesting that these cans were together. The Sick's with the yellow background is unquestionably a late 1940's can however the red B Acme was discontinued sometime in the early to mid 40's. I am going to speculate that perhaps the white version was a limited run earlier can that was discontinued with the war or else very briefly made right after. I don't see how the two labels could cross over otherwise. Incidently the Acme's were in fantastic condition with no fade or anything to suggest that perhaps they were cleanup cans thrown in at a later time with the Sicks'.

Mike and Scott, here is my white Salem Sicks next to an on-grade normal Salem Sicks. White one is basement can with no fade or rust, only lots of humidity. In person its easy to see the white paint similar to the Best next to it. Mike, looking foward to seeing yours and others. Josh.

Personally i think its a legit variation. The one i really question is the oddball yellow GB. Until i see a nice indoor verson i'll think its a faded/water damaged can...has anyone ever pulled a lid off one?? Nice cans by the way

OK here are my 3 cans as you can see the middle can is the one in question and is from Salem. The other 2 are from Seattle and Seattle Brewing and Malting. As you can see cans are rusty (what else for me) but are not faded and gold appears deeper on 'White" can. I think the above and this post prove the variation is true.

Yes it a repro and I guess I ought to pay the big $$$ to a certain person. NOT. I guess I could put the green Brown Derby under the label and be closer to real. NOTLeon wrote:Is the Associated on of those Reproductions? I'll take that green brown derby. LEON.

Yeah but in the Lilek book , Kevin says those white labels are from underground effects and not a real difference thus a R-2 rating

He may be right. I mean, after all, the indoor basement Josh's can came from is technically underground right?Kevin says those white labels are from underground effects

I wonder how many newer RBers , who werent around when those were distributed, would display one on their shelves today? I even got honorable mention in Kevin Lileks book! It was my belief , since I didnt charge for the copies , I was doing the hobby a service!

Right on. I guess I could take a black big marker and write REPO on it but I like the can as is and I think most of us know where it came from and what it is. Once again after many years THANKS.

Ok...dredging this post back up.....mike murphy wrote:OK here are my 3 cans..... I think the above and this post prove the variation is true.
On the strength of the arguments presented here.....I scoured ebay and found a buy it now auction for a white Sicks. Picked it up and just got it in today. After studying this example next to the identical yellow version, I'm sure it is faded. I find it interesting just how convincing the white looks. By and large, the effect is very consistent. So much so, I am further led to believe that with just the right time/conditions, one could fade to such a consistent white to convince everyone that it is a real variation. Now, I'm not saying that the white background variation doesn't exist, just saying that until I see an on-grade example, I believe that the fading argument is compelling enough to prevent any hard conclusions to be drawn.
Including 3 pictures below. First and third used flash....middle didn't. As you can see, the main label turned white fairly consistenly across the face. The rest of the other paint wasn't affected nearly as significantly....which I think is noteworthy in that can be misleading. Finally, there is a little patch right above the 6 where the fading wasn't complete. I have a feeling that if I could fade that patch out, it would be near impossible to tell whether this can was ever yellow.
My $.02.....
