Rusty Bunch Terminology and Acronyms

Here in the mid-Atlantic, it's the Red Death. Mountains of red black label cans, no variety or sleeper variants to be found. Must have been super cheap for about five years.

I've been deep in dumps with Bacon in Maine, and usually I hear 'oh look, a Ballantine Ale' at some point. When driving past dumpy but inhabited places, it's: "May we dig your dump?"

In Texas we have Pearl Diving. Steve Fernandes, Tom Hoefer, Crawlin' Bill Lindstrom and I were checking out a large dump near Washington on the Brazos State Park. It was huge. I jumped in and was hip deep in Pearl Tabs. This was dubbed Pearl Diving.

In NC a Budweiser is a Buttwasher instead of Buttwiper.

A Wash: see Skunked

Stealth Mode: the dumping style typically employed while willfully engaged in an act of trespass. Equally applicable where trespassing is not implicit, but assumed.

Single Punch: flattops, frequently mysteries, typically of pre-war vintage


And, a few colloquialisms applicable in the Wolverine State...


Over There, About [insert unit of time]: Michigan-style expression of distance. As in, "I know another dump about fifteen minutes west of here." Miles do not factor into this expression. Particularly in the UP, they have no real meaning.

The Bridge: The Mackinaw. Always. It is the only bridge in Michigan. All inferior bridge-like structures are called "viaducts."

Gobble Gobble!: dumpload of Goebels

JPs: Johnny Pfeiffers

The Holy Trinity: Dan Bora's blanket euphemism for any dump with a preponderance of Goebel, Pfeiffer, and Stroh's.

What the f?%k?: Any can located in Michigan that is not a part of the Holy Trinity.

A few more I have not seen here:

ABC - Age, Brands, and Condition - you want to find ABC's (not just St Louis ones) when you are out dumping.

PBC - Pre Beer Can - Dumps that are too old for beercans.

Guest Beer - Alt Heidelberg GUEST Brand Beer - the cool first label.

Running Waiter - ("Hey, I can't locate 'Running Waiter' in the USBC") - The classic Fort Pitt label.

USBC - United States Beer Cans - the current Bible for US flats and cones. Not to be confused with the United States Beer Cans with Opening Instructions - aka the Lilek Book - which is the authority on all OI's.

Big Star - Hop Gold with the big star of the front.

Rainier Gold Mountain - I might have this wrong, but I seem to hear this phrase when referring to the first yellow OI.....and NOT the second one that actually has a gold mountain near the bottom.

"Dumped out" - once ripe area "picked clean". Often times this adage is proved false.
"Triage" - Given uncertainty about being chased out, set aside the "best cans" in a spot in preparation for the next term below...
"Car run" - Take your triaged cans back to the car so as to insure their security - if you are chased off at least you have your stash of cans in the car.
"Cleaning out the dump" - meaning your "finishing off the dump". Often times happens on a second or third trip back. You are ready to "turn others on" to the dump.
"Sloppy seconds" - Going to a previously "cleaned out" dump.
"Dug" - Previously discovered dump - could have been "turned over" by non-can sorts like bottle diggers.
"Sniffy" - Meaning this area looks "ripe" for cans

We have lots of names used to specify particular cans when dumping. I won't list 'em, but a more generic one is the "field test". Find a can that might be a paintover? Give it the field test. Spit on a corner by the seam & rub fine dirt in it. Wipe off. That's the "field test". If you see anything under the first label, take it home & start rubbing.

Best field test I ever did was the spit and rub to reveal a dude rolling a barrel up a ramp - on a steam boat Old St. Louis Beer. Strange thing was the dump - one that we wrote off as spent, dug, and basically a curiousity (hit this dump many, many times over nearly 20 years) gave up such a killer can - none before and none since.

Previously mentioned "Dump Dance" - AKA "Happy Snoopy dance".

Follow-up to the dump dance - "Bring in the sweedish bikini team" - meaning thats all that it would take for nervana to ensue after a killer find.

For once I am kinda thankful for the spammer for bring this old thread to life, just read it, good stuff! Two to add:
Scatter dumping- kinda like the onesy twoseys someone else posted. I find roads of the right age, the curvier the better, with a good downhill one one side. Something with big trees that hasnt been logged, covered with big ferns produces the best looking cans. most pull offs have at least a little dump, but I like to find the dump that is scattered between them, finding the "tossers" cans that were tossed out when car still moving right when they were drank. The Gold Bug is a must for this stratagy. The variaty is extreme, often finding an oi within a foot of something tossed out within the last month.

This is a goog thread. My brother and I use walkie talkies when we hit new areas to dig and we use terms like these.
