I thought you meant the second one to be recently found, which would actually be the third known. Thats the one i was talking about, i dont know if it was true or not. Anyone ever hear????RON BACON wrote:Confirm it really existed??? What was that pic on the pool table?
The one on the pool table is owned by a RB'er but i wont say his name in case it is a secret???
No clue on the schlitz, cool looking can though!

You mean there might be a third? That would really be cool! If thats true, whats the big secret? Not so rare anymore, but still a super deluxe can to have and I am envious.
Oh well, just wondered how another was found and how it was found. As a collector, those are the stories I am really interested in. If I found a few mint Centlivres here in Ft wayne at a garage sale, I couldn't wait to tell other collectors!

Was the Schlitz Bock Crowntainer from Bob McCoy's collection?

Why drive 12 hour one way to dig Pre-Tax Tru Blu ales, Genny 12 Horse Longopeners, Gamecock Ales, Apollos, Neuweilers Bock, and Krueger’s Baldies when you can locally drive 10 hours round trip and dig Pfeiffer, Goebel, Drewrys and Strohs?

Class can #2 came out of Southern CA. It was from a very small time 70's collector. His Dad once worked on brewery equipment & found that can with 2 other not so special cones. I've got the other 2 cones from that collection & some bad tabs. There was supposed to be #3 & #4 class cans found right after #2 was found, but nobody has heard anything. Not sure if those 2 cans ever existed or not. -Mike

Wasn't one of those not-so-special cones an Old Dutch J-spout? There are about 10 indoor examples known and half of them are grade 2-ish. Only one of them is really clean. Dumpers of the can are typically very poor condition and were very difficult to obtain until Dwight and Andy found a small cache a few years ago.

Well, condition, condition, condition. The 3 cans from that collection that were worth a dang had condition issues. I think the previous owner tried to clean them & maybe they were not stored right. The Old Dutch was full and leaked over the years. When the rust was removed from the spillover, it went down to bare metal. Here are pictures of the 2 cans I still have. You can see some residue from me trying to wax them to get a little shine... guess I didn't do too good!
Also, the owner did not know which cans were the good ones, but he was given a good chunk of cash & was very happy. We all did OK on that deal, including him. -Mike

That Old Dutch is still better than the one I have!

Class can refresher course
Class # 1 - Wally Gilbert's can. It resided in his collection for years and now belongs to Ted Larsen. If you should happen to hit the MegaMillions jackpot, I'm sure you and Ted could work something out.
Class # 2 - My can. Highlighted in Matt Menke's column (spring?) 2007. Found under some equipment in PA years ago, probably in a beer distributorship. The can traveled to CA until John Kretschmer got a lead on it from his website. He enlisted Mike Wilbur to help acquire the can (and the other cans, too) and I was able to get it from them via a pretty big trade (aka, almost my entire stock of decent cans, plus a few bucks, to boot - thanks again guys).
Class # 3 - ??? This can was seen by a RB member from the east coast. He is well known and I can't think of a reason why he'd fabricate this. He saw the can at some type of shop (antique store, junk shop, whatever) but the can was not for sale. I believe he's been trying to acquire it ... so far unsuccessfully. If he wants to "go public" with this I'll leave it up to him.
As far as I know it's just these 3 cans that are known to exist. Can # 3 may never hit the market, but if I were a bettin' man (Texas Hold 'Em anyone?) I'd guess that it will some day appear on that big online auction site most of us frequent. We all joked about how common these Class cans have become, but in reality - it's still a pretty tough can.

Both of those j-spouts have been waxed and then someone put them in acid afterwards. The waxed has lifted off the can. If you take a cheap wal-mart acrylic spray and lightly coat the can the waxed will rebond and you won't see the white film anymore. I have had to do this a number of times after soaking cans that had already been waxed. (Dang Dealers!)

Acrylic spray? Can't you just use a liquid wax and clean that old wax off and then use Nu-Finish or something with a high-gloss finish?
I'm just not an advocate of spraying on anything that's perminent....then again, you and I are at odds quite a bit aren't we Candog?

I'm never at odds with you Chris, you're a bass player, your odd all by yourself!
I've tried rewaxing cans like the two j-spouts. I've tried WD-40, I've tried Acetone, paint thiner, citric acid and armour-all, they just don't work. The acrylic spray does, just a light coat, not layered on. I don't do this much myself anymore, but its the only thing I have found to get rid of the white film left by the wax.
I'd like to see a "before" and "after" Mark, do you have any photos of your method?

Sorry Mark, I don't have any photos either. I never thought to take any. However, I will the next time I get some cans like these. I'll look for some waxed cans in dollar boxes at B&G that I can do some "before and after" on.
This is a topic that has never really been explored on this site, so it could have some benefit for all.

For wax removal, you can buy a solvent from an automotive paint suppy store. Solvents like these are specifically for removing wax and other residues in between different paint processes. I'm familiar with PPG products, so I'm familiar with DX 330 and DX 440. Leon would no doubt be familiar with products similar to these.
Common sense would tell me that a shiny, waxed can won't hold any acrylic or polyurethane spray. It would simply "fisheye" or run right off the can, making a mess.
Also, don't apply ANY type of wax to a surface that isn't perfectly smooth or clean. Extreme faded or oxidized surfaces will simply soak in the wax. This is auto care 101. So these techniques would apply to any painted surfaces. I'm not sure what some of you are trying to do with some of these cans, but if you wouldn't do it to your car, don't do it to a tough or valuable can.

Currently in a collecting funk. Waiting for the bug to bite again to get back into collecting some type of cans, on a small, affordable level.

Candog-- which was withdrawn free-- you or the can?
I think you might want to hold off on the last part of this thread. Waxing your Classy can would be a really bad idea.
On the other hand, I think you'd like what WD-40 does. It will bring out some luster and repel moisture. I've done it to all my cans and (so far) am very happy with the results.
