One can, one country - Iceland

I'm having lunch in Iceland right now. I visited their test kitchen but not the new brewery.

There was a company called Svali in Iceland who sold spring water in plastic "cans" with pull tab aluminum lids back in the 80s. They were PET cans or "Petainers". They had tried them on beer in the US but apparently didn't hold the pressure. There are a number of beer test plastic cans in the USBC "Test" section.

I have seen pics of the Svali plastic water cans but never seen one in person.

The International Book of Beer Can Collecting was published in 1977. Page 57 shows two half page images of Bavarian Old Style Lager and Deep Cove beer. New Zealand Breweries produced special cans for a hydroelectricity project at Deep Cove and a scientific expedition to the south pole,
Operation Deep Freeze.

Having one of these cans on your shelf from this Auckland brewer isn't common.

As a wee lad, I remember following the news regarding Operation Deep Freeze. Helluva accomplishment for back then!

My dad was really into the whole Operation Deep Freeze thing- he found a book they issued with the same artwork as the can at left. I believe that is the only beer can with art from Disney on it too..

The artwork didn't come from Disney. I searched for references for Disney castle designs. Here's response.

Real Palaces: Designers drew heavily from European landmarks, such as Germany's romantic Neuschwanstein Castle for Sleeping Beauty Castle and French châteaux for Cinderella Castle.

I thought the same thing until my niece visit Germany one summer and I looked into it a bit more.

No, we arrived a couple days later. Apparently, the airport was a complete zoo soon after. People did not plan for the large volume of people leaving and many missed their flight.

Spent two nights at Myvatn at the Sel Hotel on August 7-8 - my wife really liked the Rhubarb Sour. We also hit the Faktor Brewery in Djupivogur while there. They had cans, too, but not as pictorial as Myvatn.

Rhubarb was one of the cans i could have selected but I showed restraint. I'm using a carry on size suitcase as my primary suitcase so I'm really limited in what I can bring home. I have six cans now and will not buy any more no matter how much I like the label.

Getting back to the rhubarb variety, some people reading this might wonder why they focused a beer on rhubarb. Because Iceland has such a short and cool growing season, they cannot grow very much outside. Rhubarb is one thing they can grow outside so it is very popular.

Rhubarb is plentiful in the Yoopee and Canada. Love the strawberry rhubarb jams and pies.

I hear you- we had the same problem, there's only so much room for beercans. I brought back the Dimmuborgir for my son - he is a fan of the Dark Metal band of the same name from Norway (which took their name from the Icelandic park), and brought back a Rhubarb Sour for me.
