Ever wonder where or when that concept came from? Maybe it's as old as the can itself! Here's an ad from 91years ago.

Thanks for sharing Ed. Grandpa always opened his cans from the bottom. Not sure why but I have quite a few of them. The cans in that ad were single punch and he always did a double punch. The cans in that ad would have to 'burp' when pouring unless poured very slowly. Maybe that was the reason?

My grandfather once told me when he was pitching horseshoes, one person would punch his can from the top and the other person would punch his can from the bottom. This way, it was easy to tell which beer belonged to which person.

The general consesus is alot of the early cans that were being sold individually and warm might have some dug build up on the top of the can, so they got in the habit of flipping them over to punch it from the cleaner bottom. Woody

Woody that sounds like a very plausible reason for opening from the bottom, especially if it was an obscure brand and sat on the shelf a bit.

I would imagine the one's pictured in the ad were shown that way so that the labels were readable.
