Morean Auction 8-28-2022

#1

Post by mtracy64 »

Here are the top six before live bidding opens, and I'm having extreme difficulty assimilating this information.

The Krueger's Bock is no surprise considering that the $30,000+ results from the past year have been on cans which typically sold between $7,500 and $12,000 until 2019 (aside from the giant Burger can). For this can to make sense against those other nosebleed results it has to go for $80,000+, and I figure there is zero chance of that happening.

I also expected the Royal cone to do extremely well due to graphics, condition and previous very high results on western cones. The Fritz Brew had a potentially very high upside in my mind. The Eigenbrot's and Fox Deluxe are huge, huge surprises and I think both have benefited from information in USBC-OI which has gone obsolete since the book was published. The Sunshine wasn't on my radar at all - is it exceptionally rare in the IRTP variation?

It's going to be an interesting day . . .

Yes, I think I commented a while back that it is weird the ceiling for can prices has held while prices have exploded. The known top online sales record was about $37k 5 years ago and has only went up to around $42k I think.

I've always had a love/hate relationship with auctions, starting with eBay, but I'm definitely leaning more and more to the hate side!

The early version of that can is considerably tougher to find.

I managed to be the underbidder on a can; that's a moral victory in this day and age . . .

Me too. Underbidder on Berghoff Ale. I refused to go any higher. Bid more than I thought it was worth. Shouldn't have participated in hindsight.
I've had the can twice before.

I shouldn't have participated! - I need to hammer this home into my cranium!

Wasn't the Fox DeLuxe can found in quantity in recent years? Isn't that the can Dan Baker had in totes for years? It took a long time to sell them in the 2k range. Or am I wrong about this?

Mine is better than the auction can, has the original bottom, still carries the BCP $1,800 price tag and was discounted from that . . .

That matches exactly with my recollection. Do you remember the number of cans in the find?

I mean, I'm thinking it was close to a case of them...

The Krueger Bock just set the new online auction record I think, 43.5K pre buyers fee. Dan was really hyping the long opener Krueger beer before it as a bargain, I almost bid on it myself.

I had been kicking the tires on them for some time before Dave made an offer I couldn't refuse at Frankenmuth the day before Gene kicked off his first round of sales. They still had at least half a dozen then, but I never knew how many were in the find.

I guess $50K is the barrier no one was willing to cross; 14% makes $49,590.

I was after the long opener Beer, but was already done by the time Dan started with "Bargain of the day", "Long Opener!", etc. It has a lot of scratches and is therefore difficult to value - I'd rather guess low than high.

We need the facepalm gif for these auction discussions. The exploding head is pretty good, but it takes ten seconds to explode.

That 50's Pabst Bock going for more than all of the Bock OI's is just nuts. Not sure what I am missing there.

It's interesting that Morean is 100 lots ahead of the Good Guys with only half an hour headstart.

Thought I would chime in on the Sunshine crowntainer: I bought that can off Ebay about 3 to 4 years ago for, as I recall $3300. It is rare for two reasons, one it only says "Beer" on the front label, as oppossed to Light Beer on the more common cans, and the S in the sun on the top of the can is in a block font. The back is unique as well, so that helps. It is rare, this one is in the top three condition, I think, not 100% on that. Thank goodness I picked up one not as good recently for my shelf. Happy to have it. I intended to buy this one back today, but when I logged on this morning and saw the price $9700, prebidding mind you, I shook my head and went to plan B. Ultimately settled for plan E today. E as in Empty!!! Also, I bought the Jordan paper label crowntainer sold today on EBay for $185 about 4 years ago. I am more surprised at the sale price of the Jordan, $2600 plus buyer premium, that I am the Sunshine, $10,000 plus buyers premium. That can is in very por condition, it even has a couple pin holes in it.

I was after that one too, looks like $1500 was my last bid but I was willing to go a little higher. I should have went after the Pabst Blue Ribbon Bock OI a little harder as I could sell my downgrade to make up the cost but oh well, not really in a buying mood today. Just won a Schmidt Draft Pike can in BCP auction, I am closing in on completing that set which is tougher than you would think ongrade.

The Fritz Brew was my can, sent it to Dan a few months ago after a tough day of not even competing for cans I wanted in his auction. It hit the price point that I thought it would so no complaints but it was a tough can to let go of.

Beautiful can!! I have always wanted one of those. It is one of those cans I want, but when I buy, I keep awhile and then resell because I have had it and it doesn't fit my collection. I sold a Royal Bru on the BCP auction today that was just such a can. I love the can, but on to to the next new one.

I am only watching the flats but many of the previous outlandish numbers have plummeted back to earth...
The Santa Fe 127-17 shaved off about $9000 to a reasonable $1287.
The two little words 'best known' as in the case of the Bull's Eye removes all restraint it appears.
I ended up with 0 cans on the Morean site in spite of bidding multiple times well beyond reason.
I hope collectors bring a few things to Norfolk and realize that the are a lot of Eigenbrot's Beers bouncing around and not
many folks will to drop $12,000.
Playing in these auctions is like my golf game, relentless failure.

Interesting to see the drops on so many things. That A-1 10oz seemed way cheap.

Crazy as this all is... Dan's entire auction would not have been the BP on the Micky Mantle card that just sold for
$12,500,000. Still an awful lot of cash sloshing around out there..... Andy
