R.I.P. Bob Kates

Post by Mizmo64 »

I received the email below this morning. I am saddened to report that we lost another great one.

Hello everyone-

It is with tremendous sadness that tonight I have to make this announcement.

We all knew that this day would come upon us sometime but it’s still very difficult to believe it as I write this email. Our great friend, fellow collector and patriarch of the Miami Valley Chapter, Bob Kates, passed away peacefully at home this evening in the arms of his wife Betty. Please keep Betty, David, Kevin, Shari and all the family in your prayers this evening as we all mourn Bob’s passing.

More information to follow in the upcoming days, including final arrangements, etc…

Bob was honestly one of the finest men that I have had the honor of getting to know over the past 40+ years. He will be truly missed by us all!

Bob was a living legend in our chapter. Truly a nice guy who you could have the most interesting conversations with about anything. Bob could tell some great stories about this hobby and he was one of the early collectors before the BCCA even started. He made some legendary scores and had one of the best collections in the hobby until he sold and specialized in Ohio cans which was one of the best collections of Ohio cans ever assembled. I would say our chapter members favorite meetings were always at Bob's house where he had one of the best brewyanna displays of Ohio breweriana. Our Christmas meeting was always at Bob's and that event will be sadly missed!!! R.I.P. Bob, you will be missed!

Does somebody have a picture of Bob? I'm sure I have met him but I'm struggling to put a face to the name.
Focus: Cones and flats from Michigan, South Bend, and Fort Wayne. Foreign cans only if I bought them myself in the country of origin.

* Michigan Chapter Winterfest, January 14, Frankenmuth Michigan
* Cabin Fever Reliever, February 24, Mishawaka Indiana

I had the pleasure a few years back to visit Bob at his Ohio State Castle with Big D Groth. Bob was VERY hospitable and it was a fun visit. He did have quite the treasures to show.

Greg said it best. A living legend for sure. Very sad.

He was definitely a fixture at some of the OH shows and will be missed, .

Bob has been a good friend for at least 40years. An avid OSU fan, he missed only one OSU home game after graduating from there in about 1960 with a degree in aeronautical engineering. He came on the scene soon after the Russians put a satellite into space. He took job with the US Government and became the US's expert on Russian missiles during the Cold War. Until last year the only home OSU football game he missed was the week after the Kennedy assassination. Last year he missed a game when he misplaced his tickets.
We traded invitations to football games. He would accompany me to the OSU game in Ann Arbor and I would attend the Mich-OSU game in Columbus.
He was a perfect gentleman, collector and sports fan. I will miss him.

I don't think I ever met him. I wish I did. I remember Dan m. Bought an Ohio collection around 15 years ago or so. Was that his?
