When were flattops last on retail shelves?

#1

Post by golf_lover44 »

I recently picked up a steel Schlitz 24 oz. "Tall Boy" that has a flat top. However it has "©1971" at the bottom of the front and back labels. It doesn't look like a re-lid but I'm not sure about it. Is it a valid can or is it a re-lid?

I remember us buying one of those full in a liquor store when I first started collecting around 1974 and remember being confused about it being a flat top.

Because of the Oregon Law there were crimped flat top cans back on the shelf because the pull ring cans were outlawed in some states.
They went back to aluminum flat top lids on a lot of cans. I just got a pabst crimped steel with an aluminum flat top in a collection.
Looking for Waukesha beer, water & soda; cans, bottles and signs.

I have two 1975 Tall Boys that are still full, same can, different lids. I received a huge full can collection years ago and the owner wrote the dates on the bottom of the can when he purchased them. Ziphippie

Not to totally sideline the thread, but the Pabst cans in Ziphippies post reminded me that I saw something in the current Morean auction that made me just shake my head and laugh: a Pabst can with the "No Opener Needed" banner........as a flat top.

after the pulltab was outlawed brewers had to improvise to ship to certain states. Also deposit laws came into play in the same time frame. It was the wild west all over again. plus a few brewers canned flats and sold at a discount in stores and bars.

Great info! I always thought the 1971 was a re-lid. pictured is a '69.

In Spring of 1978 we took a trip from MN to TX.... Getting off the interstate in OKC there was a regular tallboy in the grass at the red light. on my side of the car... I was not allowed to just jump out and grab it. My sorry 10 year old *** pouted all the way into Texas. My dad still teases me about that..... Needless to say I have one around just to remind me....
