Mississippi River cone tops
I was thinking the other day that there were a lot of breweries producing cones along the Mississippi near me on the MN-WI border so thought about how many total there were on cities along the river. Off the top of my head north to south Grain Belt, Glueks, Schmidt, Red Wing, Fountain Brew, Bubs, Heilemans, Peerless, Potosi, Blackhawk, Stag, Falstaff, and Dixie. Am I missing any? A lot of variations on some of those brands.

Re: Mississippi River cone tops
What a great topic. I've thought about it a little bit just because so much of it is related to Indian themes and of course being X MN myself.

Re: Mississippi River cone tops
I was thinking it was weird there was nothing from Memphis but I couldn't think of anything.
There is also another Davenport cone called Uchdorff, one of those high pros that hide in the book because you never see them and there is only one variation. I didn't know or forgot AB had a crowntainer.

Re: Mississippi River cone tops
Just want to make sure that Falstaff in New Orleans is also remembered as a cone top producing brewery. Saw Falstaff on the original list, but no specificity as to if that was all-encompassing for both of their breweries near the Mississippi, or maybe just thinking of St. Louis.
Fun side story, I was looking for foreign cans back in the day near a bend in the river down in Belle Chasse where ships waiting to unload at the port would dock while they waited, and I found a Falstaff cone right by the river. The can itself was in remarkable condition, with hardly a lick of rust on it. Paint was really discolored from being in the river. Sadly, I was young and dumb, and I traded that can because I had a nicer one. Should have kept it. Oh well.
Collector of fine rust, craft cans, and anything related to New Orleans area breweries past and present.

Re: Mississippi River cone tops
You're right! For some reason I thought Little Falls was in western MN but I was probably getting it confused with Fergus Falls. Looking at the map Cold Spring is practically a suburb of St Cloud these days but I am not counting it. Kiewels low pro definitely passes Red Wing as the holiest of grails on this list.beerhunter14 wrote: ↑Thu Jun 16, 2022 11:38 pm Interesting topic- Kiewel's from Little Fall ,MN. I thought of Griesedieck Bros. but looks like they only made crowntainers. Interesting topic.

Re: Mississippi River cone tops
Yep, forgot about that one. Dang, Minnesota starting to run away with this thing. So far by state:
Minnesota - 7
Wisconsin - 4
Louisiana - 3
Missouri -3 (I am counting the Bud crown although I don't see it in the book)
Iowa - 2
Tennessee - 1
Illinois - 1
Kentucky, Mississippi and Arkansas got skunked

Great thread! My Dad was born and raised in Fountain City, WI and Mom was born and raised in Winona, MN. BTW, Dad and his friends used to use Fountain Brew cans for target practice!

Re: Mississippi River cone tops
Sorry for the aah thread jack... err I mean tributary of information but thought some might find it interesting.... Seth Eastman was a career Army man who was at Fort Snelling by c 1830, came back as commander c mid 1840s, was even in Florida in 1840 (my interest right now)- He made drawings, sketches, paintings (mostly water but some oil too) everywhere he went. In 1848 he was sent down the Mississippi to NOLA and over to Texas. He made about 90 drawings in a sketch book that a ggranddaughter sold about 1950 (1947?). Many images of the trip down the river and what are considered some of the best, and earliest images, of the Alamo. The San Antonio Brewing Association was involved in the book purchase that ended up in the McNay Museum in San Antonio. Link to images they have online

Re: Mississippi River cone tops
Great thread. Does Potosi, Wis., count? Produced both crowntainers and cone tops, but is a few minutes inland from the river.

My two cents, the city or town should be on the river.

Re: Mississippi River cone tops
I have even been through there a few times but for some reason thought it was right on the river, but it is not and I agree doesn't count. I don't think Belleville Illinois is really on the river either.
