Recent finds in Apacheria

Post by hemmings »

Apache related material is probably at the top of my most wanted lists in Breweriana, postcards, photo's, and about every other thing I collect- some for professional things too on the historic side. I've had a banner few weeks and have recently completed Phase 1 of a little project in only 29 years!

The stereoview was actually the least expensive but the rarest. It may be an unknown, or at least never published, image of Chiricahua prisoners of war held at Fort Marion, St Augustine, FL between ~Oct 1886 and April 1887. I should be able to identify all of them with some work.

So a few years ago I suddenly had 3 mini's and decided to try and get a 6 pack of them and make a little wooden case for them... FINALLY got a pair to fill it up and need to get to work myself.

And in the small world department I got the 1st bottle (that still has his sticker on it) from Ed Sipos c1993 and right when I got the last pair we worked out the matchbook. Looking for the ashtray like this Greenway that was Dave Launt's now. I have been really lucky and appreciate the help of several RB'ers chasing these down (esp looking at you Romine). I did manage to make it weird when I realized the 3 new beer items cost $40 more than my first car... Andy

I grew up about 30 miles from Castillo de San Marcos (Fort Marion). I must have been through that fort 20 times at least. Oldest masonry fort in the US. Very nice Apache items by the way!

Awesome collection! I focus on one brewery in my collection also. They also have an Indian theme in their marketing... I have lots of items from my brewery of choice from cans and bottles to bottle labels, letterheads, envelopes, matchbooks even notepads with their insignia. By far, the hardest to find in decent condition are the cans. Good luck in your search. I'll keep you in mind if I run across anything from Apache

Thought I'd share some can porn - not mine. Do you have this one?

the Castillo de San Marcos has a pretty incredible history.... Most of it directly related to the comings and goings within St Augustine since 1565. I am working on a book length piece on the Native American prisoners of war brought in from the Plains (1875-78) and the Apache (1886-1887). Many Seminole were also POWs there in the 1836-42 range as well but that is a much better known piece of history. When I get it all together it should get an awful lot of good press with any luck.

As the universe has a wonderful sense of order some times I do in fact have one of those cans Bodean... Sent to me totally out of the blue by an RB Rusty Claus 3 years ago. And I can read several words on it! Now sure I could upgrade it just now though....
