Morean Auction - June, 2022

Post by Clarkston1 »

$34K and live bidding hasn’t even started yet.
I remember when Cansnatcher had this can.

No slowing down in demand it seems for these old beer cans😮

OK. Curiosity got the best of me. I looked over the numbers and here's the highlights:

I just got done looking over my watch list and my jaw is on the floor. Wow. Pre-bidding hasn't even wrapped up yet.

I honestly thought with both the stock and bond markets being off as much as they are this year, perhaps bidding would cool off a bit. Obviously not. If anything, it might be heating up even more.

I need to seriously consider selling a few things.

Yes, funny how we were all flabbergasted by the prices even 2 years ago and many of those cans are now bargains compared to now. I remember chasing a minty Fountain Brew cone and being shocked it went for as much as about $2K. Now I wonder where this one will stop.

Anyone have any idea what is going on with the solder marks on this one? I have an Old Tankard Ale with the same type marks on the rim near the seam and then 2 more on the opposite side rims. Like this one it appears it was used for something after it was drunk. A lamp? I have been meaning to take pictures and ask about it here.

Just a crazy wild guess here. Lid is intact and seemingly original. Churchkey hole in top near front face. Added "Mug" handle to be able to drink with straw without removing lid?

My first thought was a mug handle but since lid is intact and there are identical marks on opposite side it didn't make much sense. I guess a lamp doesn't make sense either since one of the soldered sides is on the face. Here is my can, same marks in same location, mine was opened above the "keglined" near the back:

Back to the topic I was hoping maybe that Badger with the repairs might be a bargain but nope. Really should have tried harder to grab the Dave Reid can.

It just occurred to me on the soldered Pabst cans, rather than something being attached to them they were likely stacked and soldered together maybe as part of a piece of furniture like the White Horse chair. Both the Morean can and mine are Premier-Pabst cans from about the same time so possibly even part of the same assembly.

Fitgers Rex high pro $3900 pre buyers premium. $70 book can but the pictured "strong" can in the book is a dumper, is this variation super tough or something?

This was Tuesday on Ebay, nice all original example but went too high for me at $915.

Sunday on Morean, replaced lid and gear marks, over $2000 with buyer fees.

Wasn't there a contest for bar owners to make a keglined can display at the bar ( or liquor store?) And people made huge displays with cans? Could these cans be from the old displays? The cans I am guessing had to be welded together.

I quit collecting baseball cards 35 or so years ago when prices skyrocketed and everything had to be graded.
I recall everyone saying it was the end of card collecting...

https://www.ebay.com/itm/234455741706?h ... 7675.l2557

Wonder who's going to be the first one to start a business "professionally grading" cans lol!

To be honest high end clean cans, even with the recent massive increase in price, still seem "cheap" compared to high end prices of a lot of other collectibles.
111,111,111 X 111,111,111 = 12,345,678,987,654,321.

I was watching that can and may have put a bid in on it but had other targets later. I won 4 cans in your last auction and am very happy with all of them. Thanks

Narragansett light Pale can below sold for a hammer price of $5,750. With buyers premium, over $6,500.

Is the 2nd or 3rd place bidder reading this? My can, in arguably the same/similar fabulous condition as the auction can is pictured below (dark shadows are not there. Very tough to photograph. Can has a beautiful metallic shine). If you have an interest, I will offer mine for less than the hammer price. No buyers premium and I'll pay for shipping.

I will also give the buyer the opportunity to acquire the other two Ale cans pictured. OI version and non-OI version. All three cans are 100% all original. That means, not rolled, original lids, no paint work. Fast forward your Narragansett collection in one shot. Call me, text me, email me, private message me. Let's make a deal!

It honestly wouldn't surprise me at all and I've been thinking the same thing. Video games, toys, and even VHS tapes all can be graded now in addition to cards and comics. One of the nice aspects of the grading services for myself, as a collector of 30's/40's comics, is a census of the graded books and their condition. Provides a great addition resource as to scarcity, condition distribution, and such. Easier to track prices for grade and such as well. Not saying this should be the case for cans, but I could see something similar implemented at some point.

Well, I believe Honus was right eye dominant. So, if the card has his right eye intact, we might have a deal. However, I would put substantially less value on his left eye. So no deal if it's the left only.

Who would pay $450 when they can get the equivalent can for $2050? Ted must think we are stupid.

I crunched the numbers post auction. To make it easier to compare, I brought down the original numbers to this post. Compare them, form your own opinions.

My personal opinion...these auction prices are INSANE!!

Say and think what you will, the Hobby is being overtaken by big money. Common collectors (like myself) are gradually losing chances at picking up even mildly tough cans. I'm resigned to it.

Do I begrudge anybody? The Sellers? The Buyers? The Auctions? Hell no.

As a retiree I have to survive on what I have. Obviously, there are folks out there having a lot more disposable income. I don't see people like myself adding much if anything to our collections for the future. There's always hope with the local shows and the RB Advertise section. They've always been good to me. If I didn't have this site to post and converse, I'd probably leave the Hobby (that would please some people I know).

Forever grateful to the Rusty Bunch...

I would love to know who is buying all these items. Are they new collectors with deep pockets? Are they just investors looking for a place to park their cash? How many unique buyers are contributing to this insanity? What do they see that the rest of us are missing? And most importantly, can I please have whatever they are smoking.

These auctions are certainly a good way for collectors as myself, who are unable, due to work and family obligations, to get to many shows. I look at all the email flyers about shows and always keep them in my inbox, hoping I can sneak away, seldom am I able. This week there is a show 10 miles from my house. This weekend my daughter has a baby shower here, the in laws are coming from all over for it, I will not make it to this one either, 10 lousy miles from my house. That said, I hold out hope, and will keep the flyer in my inbox hoping to grab an hour and run over. The point is, the auctions provide me an opportunity to grow my new crowntainer collection, currently at 131. That said, I have come to the realization, that chasing these cans in this environment is unfulfilling. Like most collectors, we are 'hunter gatherers". It is about the hunt, the chase the find, if you will, we eat what we kill. I respect, appreciate, have good relationships with most all the auctions personalities, they run businesses which feed their families and provide support for the hobby. But for me, here and now, I am walking away from the auctions. It may be pricing, am not going to say I am not beyond shocked at the level of pricing, but I can still buy what I choose to, 7 cans in yesterday auction. But I am just not feeling it anymore. They start in the morning and last all day, am my wife, family and the dogs get little attention. No way in God's abundant and beautiful green earth will I ever put a pre bid in again, that always sets the minimum price I pay, always. Too much valuable free time I can spend smelling the flowers is spent in front of my computer, I am going to stop. Over time, I will find the cans I need to get back to 250 crowntainers, that will fill my empty shelves along with the St Louis cans I now have. But it will be through the avenue of The Hunt and Ebay. I find the pricing on EBay to actually be, for the most part, quite reasonable, and I enjoy the process of checking on my watch list and competing for the cans with a set end time that doesn't require killing a whole weekend day. I repeat, the auctions are a fabulous avenue for the collectors of our hobby, maybe I am just falling back to my old school ways, after all I have been collecting beer cans for 53 years now. Crowntainers Forever, the hunt is on!!!

Thought I’d go through and list some that didn’t seem crazy high ,
Not saying these were good buys - but somewhat sensible
( humble opinion )
- Thought the Ambrosia would go for more than 4000 - $3860
- Little Dutch cone top Didn’t seem too bad - $1821
- Muehlebach cone - not a very exciting can but $351 was about right
- $439 is too much for a My Beer - but that’s about a nice My Beer as you can get
- Patrick Henry - $741 ?
- And lightly tarnished White Seal $322
To me it makes Goog Goog sense !

I think everyone agrees many of the cans in auctions go for crazy prices. Despite this, I think this hobby still offers a great deal to collectors with modest budgets. How much are the relationships worth? Catching up with people at a show (preferably) or on the phone or via email is worth a great deal.

Personally, I'm not into craft cans but I think they are very tempting. Prices are generally very reasonable at shows, the graphics are often very creative, and there is a great deal of variety from which to choose.

Another favorite for me is history. Look at all the cool stuff @keithker finds with his Newspaper.com subscription. He's only scratching the surface of what is available.

Anyway, like I said, I think this hobby offers a lot, no matter your budget.
Focus: Cones and flats from Michigan, South Bend, and Fort Wayne. Foreign cans only if I bought them myself in the country of origin.

2023 Shows Attended

* Michigan Chapter Winterfest, January 14, Frankenmuth Michigan
* Cabin Fever Reliever, February 24, Mishawaka Indiana
* Buckeye, March 11, Toledo Ohio
* SummerSwap, July 21 & 22, Frankenmuth Michigan
