Schlitz Cone Sleeper?

#1

Post by Matt Menghini »

I realized recently that this can may be a bit of a sleeper - a lot tougher than I had realized earlier. It is 183/14 which is a Schlitz Lager with a concave bottom (this one happens to be "Contains 4 and 3/4%". Anyway, I realized when I came across this one that my shelf can was a pretty nasty dumper, and that I didn't have any other Schlitz Lagers with a concave bottom. Conehead lists a few as existing, but I certainly don't have any others. What do you think? Sleeper?

Thanks for posting Matt. That's a nice can!

Definitely a sleeper.

It has always been my opinion that....

Schlitz Lager Flat Bottom LP......easy.

Schlitz Lager Concave Bottom LP.......tough.

Schlitz Vitamin D Flat Bottom LP......tough.

Schlitz Vitamin D Concave Bottom LP.......easy.

I'm not sure what marketing strategy that Schlitz had, but there was some sort of change that happened towards the end of the FBLP time period.

There was a find of about 50 of the Vitamin D flat bottoms right about the time I rejoined the hobby. I bought one for about $350 from Leon if I remember right. There is a thread on them somewhere here but basically the Vitamin D FBIR's went from tough to easy in just a few months. I think these were cans without an alcohol statement for anyone who wants to find the tougher variations. Like Jim said the concave lagers are really tough though. It's weird as my understanding is the lagers became the Vitamin D's rather that both being made but we are talking about something that probably happened over about 3 months, not surprising they ran some of both in concave and flat bottoms.

I still wouldn't call the Vitamin D FBLP easy. Here is the post I made showing the one I got from the find. I'm not sure if this is the thread you were referring to. From my contact with the seller the total number was about a case and a half and there were a fair number of them that weren't grade 1.

Thanks yep that was the thread I remembered for sure. I am not sure if the can I got from Leon was one of them just assumed it was as there were a lot of them popping up on ebay at the time. I think I may have been getting them mixed up with the Alt Heidelberg OI find with my 50 number but the prices on the Vitamin D FBIR's did seem to fall in line with the lagers for a couple of years there. Of course now they are all going for much much more.

Yes, probably a lesson to be learned there to take advantage of finds when they come up even if you may believe the cans are now more common. They may trade around for a couple of years but eventually settle into longer term collections and are tough again. Other than the Schlitz Lager, Heilemans and Blatz all the FBIR's seem a bit more scarce than they were 7-8 years ago.
