$150 vs. $11,000 - What am I missing???

#1

Post by OhioCanGuy »

Two recent auction results. One on ebay, one in a can/breweriana specific auction.

What am I missing here? Looks like the same can to me. Same size stars as well. Ebay deal of the year?

Would be interesting to know who is bidding in Dan's auctions. That could help answer the 'why' question when things do not make sense on the surface.

Someday, as part of his retirement, Dan will write a tell all book that explains the back story on countless breweriana deals over the years.
Focus: Cones and flats from Michigan, South Bend, and Fort Wayne. Foreign cans only if I bought them myself in the country of origin.

2023 Shows Attended

* Michigan Chapter Winterfest, January 14, Frankenmuth Michigan
* Cabin Fever Reliever, February 24, Mishawaka Indiana
* Buckeye, March 11, Toledo Ohio
* SummerSwap, July 21 & 22, Frankenmuth Michigan

We truly are in Bizarro world! Obviously there are folks out there with unlimited funds who want what they want. They don't have the time to scour eBay or Facebook and just go to high end auctions. It sure makes many of us scratch our heads....and hope that we can get similar results! Based on Auction prices, the number of Beer Can millionaires is quite large!

Only thing that I can see that you are missing is at least $21,850 and some change for the non OI. :smt021

It appears the ebay auction was a Buy It Now. A big Oopsy on the underpriced offering!
As for the other - I have no idea.
The better of the 2 ebay auction OIs looks to be about as good as this can gets.
Decent examples of this can have not generated a great deal of excitement in years past, although they all seem to have had some distracting issue that perhaps tempered enthusiasm.

It was a $29.99 opening bid with a Buy It Now option. Given the history of bargain eBay sales such as the Silver Stock and American Draft, I have to wonder if the winner received the cans or was "outbid" after the fact.

To October Ale's point, "decent" is the best I'd seen this can until Dan's listing, but I certainly didn't expect he'd get five figures for it. Then again, I still live in a world where the Storz Winterbru falls a bit short of figures . . .

The Morean can, while clean, still has the dreaded gear marks that, in years past and in the world I want to live in, would sharply curtail the value.
The better of the two ebay cans is all original, top condition, and has both lids. I think it's the only example I've seen of that can that checks those boxes.

I have some crackpot theories but no concrete answer to the question. I did just win my very first Morean auction can after ending up #2 on a dozen or so cans over the years (usually the single rustiest one in the auction) for not an insane price given what the label (Argonaut) has trended toward across ebay and multiple auction sites. So some cans go at a seemingly fair price, a few are bargains, and some are off the charts. It doesn't seem super consistent. The last Oertel's Bock crown I think went for about 1/10th of the previous one, though I didn't compare condition closely.

I remember being shocked even back in the 90's what the Fink auctions were netting. Is it perhaps in part that a swath of wealthier collectors really gravitate toward that format, rather than in the trenches with the hoi polloi on ebay and at shows? The few truly wealthy people I've met over the years are actually fiscally pretty conservative, NOT spendthrifts like we see here. It's very confusing.

@CarlS. Be careful wanting to know who the actual bidder is. After witnessing some of these guys brag about how much they spend and how much money they would get from selling “this can in my collection”; I personally would prefer they stay anonymous.

IF the auctioneer can see the top bids and then manipulate the bidding to benefit the seller and himself (he gets 35% of the take), is it any surprise these cans are selling for crazy prices? It is time to stop glorifiying this dealer and stop bidding because it is unfair and perhaps unethical to bidders. As for these cans that go to these collectors auction houses, you might as well consider them being smashed flat with a hammer because most likely they will gone from the hobby forever. Do you really think anyone collector in their right mind will buy back the gr 5 Triangle Beer for $28,000? They will write it off and throw in the garbage. Isn't this just wonderful what is happening to our hobby?

Cap-sealed, agree with you in that the auction prices have gotten out of control, and it has had a negative impact on the hobby. While I enjoyed the first couple of years of the auction, the fact that any auctioneer who has a vested financial interest in the outcome has the possibility to bid on cans in their auction makes me very uncomfortable in participating in that auction.
