First Aluminum bottle; When?
I have several aluminum bottles from the last 80s and early 90s. I was told the first "cabottle" was the Iron City cabottle.
Are the 80s aluminum bottles with the attached stoppers from Germany not considered the first aluminum bottles?
I was stationed in Schwaebisch Gmuend Germany in the 80s and never went to the Engel Brewery for some reason.
I started collecting the different aluminum bottles as I find them. Really great early printing on aluminum!
The earliest one I have pre 1989 as it states "west Germany" on the neck label.
These would be the earliest aluminum bottles as far as I know.
Are these stopper aluminum bottles not considered "ca bottles"?

@zoinkss
The first part of the indicated paragraph might be talking about something like that Pabst aluminum bottle. the second parts credits Iron City.

Re: First Aluminum bottle; When?
At some point you can enjoy a beer fueled discussion at the bar over when is a cone top a bottle or a can... German/Swiss/Spanish/French breweries after WWII did use 2 piece aluminum cones in the 50's - some painted, some with paper labels affixed. I have not heard a solid and documented "this was the first one to be released on such and such date", so not sure of the year that these first appeared on the market but would not be surprised if 1952 or 1953?

Re: First Aluminum bottle; When?
I guess the only 'answer' is a timeline of the issue of each type of cabott... alumacone... spun master... capped thingies. I thought the first modern cabottle was the Mich/Mich Light they were selling on cruise ships or something? A friend lucked into some at an old redneck liquor store and sealed up a pair in the wall of his addition, circa 2006 or so. I sold the very first one on ebay so I guess I could look it up. No one even knew what they were so they all went for about $5.
Then there's the meta conversation. I guess we all agree crowntainers are cans and not bottles? The big picnic pabst (I think, never seen the bottom of one) and the modern cabottles are all spun and made with a single slug of metal. ie, no bottom crimped on later. Does that matter, or is it the seamlessness that makes the difference? Or is just that they're metal and not glass? 'Canning,' back in the day, was preserving a food product in glass or metal. Is it the bottleneck the difference between canning food and bottling food? I think we need a focus group and a committee to get to the bottom of this.

Better to drive 950 miles and kick asz than go a thousand miles and get nothing.

Re: First Aluminum bottle; When?
I have seen the Special pabst aluminum bottles before and know someone who has one.
I would say this is the holy grail of aluminum bottles. Were these special pabst aluminum bottles tests or did they actually market them to the public?
Putting them aside, When did the aluminum bottles start and was it here in USA or in Europe with the restoppable aluminum bottles?
I know from what I have in my collection that the Iron City was not the first.
I was hoping to find more info on the aluminum bottle history. There must be more aluminum bottles between the Special pabst and the ones I have from the 80s.

Re: First Aluminum bottle; When?
The Pabst aluminum bottles date to 1936 and were marketed. I wrote an article for the BCCA magazine this past summer providing a little background about them.
