Oh great, even MORE Grail cans...

#1

Post by menke »

Guess I'll start the Morean Auction thread this month. The auction basically quadruples the number of grail cans available this month for me; may I please take one home? My default is to end up #2 bidder on the single rustiest can in Dan's auction, so here goes!

And in an Ugly Can related thread, I withdraw my question if Marlin was the only good-looking white can out there. Every time I see one, I instinctively check to see if the paint is peeling.

Yup. Another amazing auction. Can't wait to see what some of these go for. Like the Bay State and Copenhagen Castle. Playing the lottery just in case.

Hilarious. Totally agree! When I saw this can listed and looked at the pic, I immediately thought "I know it has that unpainted looking area, to the upper left, but this looks like more than usual". Sure enough, upon closer inspection, it's as it should be.

Congrats to anyone who has one on the shelf (tough can) but man, that design is distracting as he*l.

Man, so many really nice cans. I'm going to watch the Marlin but I have a feeling it'll go for more than I'm comfortable with. I swore I'd not get into a bidding war on an auction site but that can is high on my list.

I'm not savvy about online auctions but having one this time of year seems like unfortunate timing for some bidders. It's right after Christma$$$ and also when property taxe$$$ need to be paid (at least here in MO). This will limit the amount I can spend within my comfort zone. Probably the guys that bid on these cans don't worry about stuff like that, but I do. Anyway... really enjoy seeing some very nice cans and hope all the rusty brothers are able to get one of the cans on their list. :smt023

Any theories where all of these cans are coming from?

I'd say three main sources:

1. Normal flow of can finds, guys passing away and heirs selling their collections, etc.
2. A few years back, arguably the largest collection on the planet of rare AND mostly ongrade cans was sold. Dan M. bought most of it. The Good Guys ended up with a sizeable chunk as well.
3. As extreme prices are realized via dealer auctions, guys are being motivated to sell a few cans here and there. Others might be selling it all as the lure of the current environment is just too good to pass up (in their eyes).

My $.02

Bob, I'd add that these auctions have siphoned off a sizable amount of ebay's business as well. Scroll ebay now and it's virtually all slag. Lovely that it's available 24/7, though, whenever I need a fix. And the dealers basically no longer offer any cans at fixed prices, either.

I think it started with the Morean Auctions and the Judd collection and then the prices surged up during Covid. At this point I think a lot of guys see this as maybe the last time prices get this high and are selling some long held cans while the time is right. It will be interesting to see if the high prices hold as maybe the perception among guys getting back into the hobby is this is the way it is and they will continue to bid these up.

That Red Lion Ale is more than just "slightly" yellowed, right?

Question to axe: Do you feel these prices are consistent on eBay also? I've mailed a few cans to Dan and the boys at beercansplus (shameless plug!) and they've exceeded what I would ask at a show by quite a bit. 25-50...heck,twice my price. Do you feel this is true for tabs and easier cans, or is it crazy for the elite level cans?

Your RB number is 666?

The elite level cans have historically done well in these auctions, but it's really only been the last two auctions where elite level cans have gone completely bonkers almost across the board. I was never surprised much when a high-end can went 25% above expectation/history, but 2x and 3x is staggering. In general though, the dealer auctions have been extremely chaotic, with cans in all price ranges occasionally going far beyond anybody's wildest expectation. It happens far too often to be written off as anomalies, but it's also not remotely consistent. I do find eBay prices to be up significantly and inconsistent too, but not nearly as much as the dealer auctions (with an occasional exception).

Matt, Not completely true. While we have neglected our website (something we said we were not going to do), We still go to shows and sell cans for what we have on the bottom of them or even discounted. We were at a show yesterday in Frankenmuth, MI that had a nice turn out and sold at prices unaffected by what we could have gotten for them in an auction. But, I do understand the point that you are trying to make.

More and more grail cans that were locked up in collections for years are hitting the market. Be patient, you will see even more as time passes. With these dealer auctions, you'll pay 15-20% to the auction site to sell, plus Uncle Sam is going to be looking for his 25+% as well....that's 40% right off the top. Something to think about.

Barry, Thanks for the plug! From what I have observed. The past 2 years or so tabs and cleaner easy cans have been doing better than ever. This started with eBay initially and had since trickled into the auctions. We didn’t see this so much in the earlier auctions. Again, this is just my observation.

Something to think about indeed. This auction is no longer fun anyway. It's a joke. There are people willing to pay WAYYY too much for these cans. I'm shutting it off! lololol.

What's going on with this one? I don't get it. I bought one for $400 about a year ago. Is there something I'm not getting about this particular one? Dan didn't even describe it as all that special. Is it just the alcohol volume variant??? $14k before the live bidding even starts?

That's one of the two I was referring to when I mentioned five-figure premiums on minor variations above (the Bay State Ale is the other). It has to be the alcohol statement . . . that can with a common alcohol statement ran about $750 just a few years ago.

Looks like an Oertel's Bock crowntainer is now a Holy Grail can, who knew? $18,000 before buyers premium. That is just amazing!!!

Very happy that several yrs a good (collector) friend of mine convinced me to spend $300 on this example since I was waffling on it so much……Thanks Jim!

Crazy!!! Today really convinced me to not bother at all with these auctions. I have disposable income, but not like these maniacs. I even bid on some stuff just for fun and it quickly became unfun. Gotta get my *** to some shows!

The awesome WI collection pics were courtesy of carsbr549. He posted pics of his collection after acquiring the 3 propeller flats from Jos. Schlitz. He had something north of 25-30 Schlitz cones in his collection! Just amazing!! If anyone can comment on this Schlitz variation, he’s the man to ask!

I thought this auction might come back down to earth a bit, as it seemed to contain perhaps fewer truly spectacular offerings than some of the recent ones. I was completely wrong in my thinking. I'm flabbergasted by the prices realized. I'm glad I picked up a Michel crowntainer before this auction.
9,000 hammer is just multiple times what I've known this can to trade hands for...

I don't know what to think. It's disorienting.

That paper label Eblings cone - isn't that about 10,000 beyond what it has historically sold for?

It's hard to imagine scoring a decent can at a show right now. If it's quality, it seems foolish not to put it up for auction.

I see an Oertels Bock, a little off, but half decent was just listed on EBay for Buy It Now $6500. Is that a deal?

Which dealer auctions are you referring to, specifically? Of those, which one(s) charge more than a 15% consignment fee? I haven't given much thought to consigning but the way prices are, it's tempting.

I inquired into one of the auction sites and it was also 10% on the seller so 25% total. I stuck with ebay as it is half that but if had a holy grail I would go straight to Morean.
