Ever actively dislike a can?
Was thinking this morning about how I love all cans and would welcome any in to my collection. Then remembered how much I hate P.O.C. labels. No idea why. I just do. Hahaha. SO odd. Hope I didn't offend any P.O.C. lovers out there.

Re: Ever actively dislike a can?
Billy beer had more promotion and no product taste. Fads with such hype go flat for the serious collector.

50’s Drewrys cans (except series). Absolutely everywhere when dumping.
Weidemann cans are bland too.

Great topic! Besides the usual suspects that non-collectors think are rare & valuable: Billy, Harleys, MASH, JR Ewing,…
I despise: Any Schell’s (New ULM) with sta-tabs, orange Gablingers, Pocono Mountain Premium Beer series & Bob’s Special Beer (all colors, etc)

Re: Ever actively dislike a can?
Hahaha. It's so funny to think about hating a can or label, but it's like anything else, right? All a matter of personal preference. I feel you on those Bob's. And also Monster re: the black labels.Pbama wrote: ↑Sat Dec 04, 2021 10:18 pm Great topic! Besides the usual suspects that non-collectors think are rare & valuable: Billy, Harleys, MASH, JR Ewing,…

Re: Ever actively dislike a can?
Great question! And, no, I don't. I can't explain it. I only know how it makes me feel. LOL. I think it might have to do with me having way too many POC tabs back in the 70's when I first started collecting

Re: Ever actively dislike a can?
I really dislike all those boring mostly-white cans from Eastern brewing of Hammonton, NJ. They literally spent no time or money on graphic design.
Now here is the kicker: I kinda think all the Weideman series cans are not too bad! I actively look for them.

I agree, and I expect you'll get concurrence from a couple of the NJ guys. I'm told the beer was terrible also.stringsx24now wrote: ↑Sun Dec 05, 2021 10:45 am I really dislike all those boring mostly-white cans from Eastern brewing of Hammonton, NJ. I didn't used to hate Regal cans but I do now... Thank you for expanding my Hate-o-Scope..... Kidding aside there are some real dogs mentioned here. The Mash can is one of a few I really just don't like the look of at all...

Cans I don't like much: Schmidt's with 2 and 3 shields on the front, what's up with that? Scotch Buy and TCA are ugly. TCA has to have the worst graphics EVER!

All the Bob's cans in different colors kinda made me say "the hell with this" back in the 1970s.

I have never liked Wiedemann cans. Just plain ugly! Reminds me of the generic beer cans.

I'm so conflicted right now... I kinda like the Regal Ale.... At least we can all agree that the Andy's and Andy's Crossroad cans rocked!

Re: Ever actively dislike a can?
I can't say that I hate certain cans or have a strong dislike, but there are some awful cans out there, mostly late 70s early 80s and targeting the beer can collectors. Was there ever a need for the TCA can? Or many of the 'commemorative' cans that helped keep some small brewers from going into the red.
However, the tall Stroh's pints really get me going. They suffer from humidity and tarnish and don't quite fit the shelves with the 'normal' 16s. What solution to what problem were they designed and produced? Save money?
So far I have 3 different, all sitting in a box with other oddball tall or skinny cans such as Schlitz, Old Milwaukee, Piels, etc.
Maybe I'm just not being inclusive enough...

Re: Ever actively dislike a can?
I second the Red Devil hatred. I kind of like what I call 'freaks and geeks,' all those can styles that were filled by only a single brewery. I forgot about those horrid Stroh's until just now... I'm going to build a special shelf for them since they don't fit in anywhere.
I used to keep a list of the Ten Ugly Quarts, quart cones so ugly that even clean they look awful. Best, Regent, white Burger, Erlanger Deluxe, Goldcrest white, Loewer's, Old German, white Yuengling and a couple others. White being the common denominator. They were ugly but I didn't hate them, only hated the ones that were too rare to be on my shelf to glare at.

Re: Ever actively dislike a can?
In general I don't like white cans, I remember coveting the Carnegie cone but then I got one and didn't think it was so cool when in hand. I think the white Duquesne high pro and the Gam are among the ugliest cones.

This conversation seems to be pretty backwards looking, however if we're honest, I think most will agree that there are some pretty hideous cans being produced now by the smaller, newer, microbrew-ish type folk. My personal least favorite is probably Fistmas

Re: Ever actively dislike a can?
So, is there a universally attractive white can out there? Trying to think of one... Marlin maybe?
Also, I have a bias against any can younger than me (1970). They all feel like trash, so I don't consider them collectible. I realize all these one-and-done fly-by-night craft cans will all one day be rarer than a Burger 1/16th barrel, but I won't care. I was in a dump some years back and found a Foster's oil can and Jaws-era Gansetts, and discovered I had the feeling of being amongst trash. In a dump older than me, I feel like Indiana Freaking Jones. So I can't properly hate any craft can, because it's just not old enough.

Re: Ever actively dislike a can?
Easy on those white cans , specially those from Rochester .. i would say to myself that some of those SS cans in 70s had to have just gross beer and couldn’t imagine drinking from those vessels , those I deem ugly .. maybe like a Wisconsin Club .. Bavarian Select.. I do like the green Regal Ale and Weideman labels

Maybe it's just me but the label on that first can implies that santa's junk-region has some part in the ageing process...assuming storage barrels are involved.Rand wrote: ↑Thu Dec 09, 2021 6:51 pm This conversation seems to be pretty backwards looking, however if we're honest, I think most will agree that there are some pretty hideous cans being produced now by the smaller, newer, microbrew-ish type folk.
