Re: So You Like Zip Tops...
Wow! This post has generated some serious interest. I took the cans displayed and looked them up, putting together this list.
NEW LIST IS IN POST #48
I'd like to believe there are more undocumented zips out there. Check if you got any. If so, post the images here like these guys did.
Like the gentleman said in one of these posts, the Supplement Team can use the help.

Re: So You Like Zip Tops...
Thanks for this list. I know of one can that should not be listed as a zip on there. The Home Ale. It is my (rusty) can pictured, and it is a fan tab...

Re: So You Like Zip Tops...
I could not resist - good reason to fondle some ziptops!
I have 116 14, 15, 16 oz in the collection, 50 are zip intact.
sorry picture is fuzzy - will try again in daylight tomorrow
I know a few of these not on the bcca supplement yet,
I can maybe take some closer shots with cans rotated to show seam or mandatory variations

@storzman
Amazing collection. And you even arranged them alphabetically!
With the list I started above, I looked up each can that was provided and entered whatever the data page said. I think that way, we can pass along the list to the Supplement people. They can at least edit the database. And they can see by the images here that these cans do exist.
Whatever data you're able to provide, I will appreciate it and try to work it all into the list I started and modify it as needed.

Re: So You Like Zip Tops...
Here are a few more that I don’t think are listed.
The malt liquors (1963) I believe are 2 121 18 4, but with contents on back flush left and centered.
The malt lagers (1963) I believe are 1 121 09, but with contents on back flush left and centered.
The old Milwaukee is like 2 159 11 0, but with script “M” and “D.”

Re: So You Like Zip Tops...
Here's how I came up with the 877 number. I used the current Supplement search.
Click to enlarge.
Every image that has a "Z" in the identification was counted in the search. Only when you go to the can data page will you see if the Zip version is actually documented to exist or not. That's how I came up with the designations I used in my list.
If we have all the images here the databases can at least be edited to reflect those cans' existence.

Re: So You Like Zip Tops...
With 6 designs and ~15 colors, there are potentially 90 12oz Jubilees and another 90 half quart ones - not including different zip top generation lids. I'd love to see many of these in the composite.oldindiapaleale wrote: ↑Tue May 04, 2021 9:26 pm Missing from this zip search, as well as the supplement, are the Esslinger Parti-Quiz, Rainier Jubilees, Schmidt Scenics.
I would like to see them in the supplement.

Re: So You Like Zip Tops...
@Wisbeers
There are four 1963 Malt Liquors currently in the Supplement:
There's only 1 1963 Malt Lager listed.
Agree with your choice that it's an unlisted variation.
If you can pinpoint the Schlitz cans closer, I'll add all to the list. Let me know.

@oldmoneytexan
Edward,
If my interpretation of your images was correct for the data sheet, maybe group images like that would be easier for you. All I did was look over the can in your image(s), searched the database for a similar one and noted if it was documented or not.
I'd be glad to work with you to propagate the list since the Supplement team is otherwise occupied. Then maybe someday, they can use the list to update their data. There would be a list with appropriate images to back up the content of that list.

Re: So You Like Zip Tops...
@jimw630
I'll use his can as an example of what I'm doing. He provided images showing the Zip Lid and the basic face along with the number he believes the can is. I go to that can and look at the data page. I verify the number. I see that the can is logged in as both a Zip and Tab. In the comment section, it states that theTab is shown and the Zip is undocumented. I add it to the list and list it as undocumented. Simple?
Click to enlarge.
If you think you have an undocumented Zip Tab can, post it here with an image of the lid and face along with what the number you think it should be. We'll maintain the list as a reference only.
The Supplement team will be responsible to verify and photograph for the official list.

Re: So You Like Zip Tops...
Found some time to compare the ZT composite to my cans, good exercise as made 2 corrections to my collection spread sheet where I showed a ZT and can was a U Ring.MI-Cans wrote: ↑Thu May 20, 2021 2:03 pm I've put together this list containing both documented and undocumented Zip Top cans that were provided. Found 3 Colt 45s that are not on the composite - two of them not pictured in supplement either
147-20-3 NEW CAN - FROM MIAMI, RED LETTERS, 16 FL OZS-ONE PINT
147-26-2 NEW CAN - FROM BALTIMORE, CONTENTS 16 FL OZS - USED 26-2 SINCE HAS EARLY ZIP LID WITHOUT SMILE BEADS
147-26-7 NOT LISTED AS ZT - FROME BALTIMORE, CAN LISTED IS EARLY CCC PULL, THIS CAN FROM CROWN CORK/SEAL
Also - this 1964 Burgie from LA is shown as a ZT in the supplement - I doubt it came as a ZT - both the TO can in the supplement now and this BO version are U-Rings, but don't know for sure. Seems if a ZT is not known to exist it should not be included - maybe somebody has one?

@storzman
Thanks for the additions. I will add the Colts to the list. The Burgie you're showing is definitely a Pull Tab. I checked the book and they say there's a documented Zip Tab. For them to say that it would have required having physically seen it or having hands on.
With all the interest, I thought I'd add a notation to what I call my Canology (study of cans) sheet. With all the confusion using the word "generation" I needed something to clarify my recognition of the groupings.

Nice one Jim! The U-Ring on the web page is my can - figured it had to come as a Zip too - All the others from General I have are zips from SF, Azusa and SLC. The U-Ring seemed the oddball

Maybe consider posting a request to post images of Zip Top soda cans for purposes of a reference list. Have them provide image of lid on the can and ask for basic info. You get regular visitors to that forum.
All you can do is try! Who knows what'll turn up.
Duplicate the request in this forum for added coverage.

Just a quick note for anyone following this thread.
@oldmoneytexan was gracious enough to photo his collection of Zip Tops. I will add all of them (384) to my list along with the contributions from @Scott Rollert, @Flat_Top, @storzman, @Wisbeers and @jimw630.
Unlike the composite I created off of the Supplement images (see post #1 of this thread), the list I'm currently working on is based ONLY on all the provided images of Zip Top cans. I check the Supplements for status of the cans pictured and so far there are over 100 undocumented cans out of the 400+ cans on the list.
@idigrust was nice enough to gather all of OMT's posts with images and locate them in one place. Here's the link:

If anyone else wants to submit images of their Zip Top cans, please do so. Maybe you have a Zip Top or two that you've never found in the Supplements. Get it (or them) documented here. Just provide an image showing the lid atop the can and provide any info relating to the can so I can try to identify whether it's documented or not in the Supplements.
My intent is to have a reference of Zip Top cans on the Rusty Bunch site for everyone's use.
Thanks to all that have contributed and those that might do so in the future!

Re: So You Like Zip Tops...
Just to clarify that I'm not doing the Product Development Teams work for them. They still have to find the Zip Top cans, Verify their existence and add them to the Supplement.
My intent is to establish a Reference list of these cans on this website based on what everyone provides pictorially to me. I then look up the numbers provided for each can in the Supplement and classify it accordingly. Here are three examples of look-ups.
Click to enlarge.
The list is a work in progress. Out of nearly 400 cans so far, I've found a little over a hundred to be UN-documented.
If you've got a Zip Tab that you've never found in the Book or the Supplement, share it in this thread and we'll add it and its status for this reference. Thanks for everyone's time and effort.
