I always collected coins and stamps growing up - still have my stamps and some coins. Something about rare US coins popped up on my home page and I found this worthy of posting for this group. It is the Kansas quarter

Why is the "T" Missing?
Like all mechanical machines, a lubricant is needed in the coin press to prevent the metal parts from causing friction to each other. In this case, some lubricating grease escaped from the machinery onto the surface of the coin die, eventually plugging up the letter T in TRUST. With the T being plugged, when the coin dies struck the planchet, the T wasn't fully transferred to the surface of the coin. This type of error is called a struck through grease filled die (or just "filled die") error.

Re: In God We Rust?
Must look carefully at my Kansas quarters; did not know about this die error. Seems like the US Mint approves of the Rusty Bunch. "If its rusted....."

I doubt this was a simple error. Probably some anarchist
at the mint did it on purpose.

Re: In God We Rust?
Long time coin collector here (since 1968 when I was five!), not too active nowadays though. I never actively collected mint errors but I believe this is actually a relatively common type of mint error. The same error would exist on most parts of the design of this or any other denomination. I doubt there was any kind of sinister intent on this.oldindiapaleale wrote: ↑Tue Apr 27, 2021 8:00 pm Like all mechanical machines, a lubricant is needed in the coin press to prevent the metal parts from causing friction to each other. Re: In God We Rust?
I'd say sinister.. otherwise there'd be a hundred different similar die errors on insignificant details, not just the funny or clever ones. I'm thinking of the three-legged buffalo nickel. Wasn't there another one that was missing the schwantz?

Looks like the “T” is still there, just much lower relief?
