The current Good Guys auction has a Ballantine "Bumper" quart cone top can. I do not recall seeing this before. What does "bumper" mean?

Thanks!

Focus: Cones and flats from Michigan, South Bend, and Fort Wayne. Foreign cans only if I bought them myself in the country of origin.

In modern street parlance, a “bumper” is a 40-ozer and usually a bottle. Generally, it’s a big azz container of beer.
I’d guess most people think it’s a 70’s term. Cool that it goes back much further.

@pinnacle-project Much as @Black Horse had referred to the term here is what it looked like in ads. It was the big boy version. It showed up in the 1937 ads when the new quart cans were popular. It remained in ads even during the war but was strictly for bottles since no cans were made.

The big pre-war cans are all "Bumpers" [Ballantine] or "Growlers" [Manhattan] or "Silver Seidels" [Gretz}. All of these terms refer to quart cans or bottles.
