You Make the Call!!
Which one would you keep? The restored one on the left, was an Ackerman can which then was acquired by Larson , which Charlie Smith picked up and sold to me a couple years ago....as far as paint jobs go , it not bad at all.............or The can on the right was just picked up at the Mile Hi Chili show last weekend in Denver...I was hoping it was the DARK variant so I wouldn't have to decide. I knew a guy had it and bugged him for the past 10 years and this summer at the ABA national he told me he was ready to part with it and Id get first dibs. He stated he had it since 1981.

Re: You Make the Call!!
I have always been fascinated by when, exactly, repainting cans went from being OK to being absolutely taboo ... in the early 1980's it was pretty acceptable practice, by about the mid 2000's it was an absolute sin.
I think I'd keep the one on the right too, but if you don't want the one on the left I'd be happy to have it!

Re: You Make the Call!!
how much of the repainted can is original. ie if you nremoved the repainted portionwould the can be much nicer if the one on the left has a lot of original surface I would keep it. When in doubt keep both for awhile to be sure. On some old touchup people would paint an entire color over just to cover a few rust spots. Tom

Re: You Make the Call!!
Yep, I concur. I would rather have an original in grade 4, than a almost A-1 restored can, especially since even a low grade dumper Travis is such a rare can to acquire!Rand wrote:Original over repaint

I'd keep the original can on the right. That repaint would bother me every time I saw it on my shelf.

Original. I just don't like non-original cans.
Focus: Cones and flats from Michigan, South Bend, and Fort Wayne. Foreign cans only if I bought them myself in the country of origin.

I'd keep the one that has the better "story" to go along with it. Seems like chasing the can for 10 years is the better story.

Re: You Make the Call!!
Thanks for the input fellas......I'm surprised the painted can didn't get much love....the yellow is what is really the main part of the restoration , the rest of the colors were pretty much original except a few spots in the white.

Re: You Make the Call!!
Original over restored every time. But I am surprised that no one has asked this question - how feasible would it be to remove the paint over paint from the restored can? Quite often, when I get a painted can, it gets some acetone and gentle rubbing. But then I haven't been faced with a can like this. Still, I would be giving it some though.

Re: You Make the Call!!
I have noticed several repainted cans that were not repainted near the seam, and you can tell that they were not even cleaned with acid properly before repainting.Beercanpete wrote:I have always been fascinated by when, exactly, repainting cans went from being OK to being absolutely taboo ... in the early 1980's it was pretty acceptable practice, by about the mid 2000's it was an absolute sin.
How would they have turned out if restored properly to see how they looked instead of just painting them? SAME with all of the cans that were sprayed with lacquer
or some other coating without even being properly washed with soap and water, let alone an acid bath that would have drastically improved the condition.
The reason I have no respect for many Coke collectables is that so much of the stuff out there has been manufactured to make money
off the collectors who just want pieces in their collections and don't worry about authenticity. Same thing with Stein or mug collectors.
I just want to collect something that wasn't made so I could collect it. REPAINTS are exactly that.
Taking 40 dumper Gold Age lp cones and painting them to look grade 1 just isn't true to rarity, even if you know it has been repainted.
Ultimately, I could pay a top notch artist to repaint every super rare dumper that I could acquire, and what would I have? A really awesome display of
"remanufactured" cans. Every rare can is documented, and personally, I don't see the need to have a repainted version, just so I can put one of the shelf.
I can look in a book if I want to know what it looks like in the best condition.
I think I have two repaints in my collection of rare cans, but I would never pay more than $10 for one, and the same repainted cans that I have, I have seen
sold on eBay for near $100 each in repainted condition. Just not where I want to put my can acquisition money.

Re: You Make the Call!!
A few thoughts on this painting thing. Normally, I agree with just about everyone that touched up cans are to be avoided. But having said that - it is true that I am ok with displaying an otherwise near impossible can with touch up. I mean - why not? Odds are for mere mortals that there are certain cans that we are never going to be able to get otherwise, so who cares about a little touch up under the circumstances? Also, there are obviously all kinds of cans that you might want to get with a bit of touch up on them while you wait for a better one, so again, why not? Finally, under some circumstances, I personally believe that a touch up can is better than the original. Case in point: way back when Fred Wolpe got a hold of a lot of completely faded desert cans - some real tough labels like Ambassador, Associated, Golden Creme, etc. He had the labels painted by a pro artist in Holland. The guy did a great job and was careful not to touch the side panels so there would be clear proof what the can was. So which is better, the label painted or the desert fried/faded can that you could barely make out? Over the years I've held a lot of those while I waited to get a better one, and if some label like a Silver or Royal or Leidigs was to come along like that, I know I would take it. I can live with a painted label if the alternative is to have nothing at all. Just my two cents.

Re: You Make the Call!!
By the way, on Dan's can, I would take the Travis dumper over the painted label. The dumper has plenty of good color so an easy decision for me.
