Autocrats - Where they were dumped

#1

Post by ozarkridgerunner »

Does anyone have any information about where the 3 Autocrat cans were dumped? We would like to add that info to the RB display at Canvention. Knowing that the first one surfaced at a flea market, the second at Blue Gray and the third on ebay does not tell the real story. Same goes for Chicago Black Dallas - we have info about finding STL in TX, but need info on Chicago variety.

Also, we need a Black Eagle for the display. Anyone have one they can contribute? Also need Rosalie, Autocrat and Dancing White Horse.

THANKS!

Cheers, Paul King

I got my Chicago Black Dallas from Ken white back in the early 80's. He told me there were 7-8 that were found under a house in North West Texas. that is all I remember about that find.
Looking for Illinois, Missouri and Texas steinie bottles. Looking for US stubby bottles produced between 1936 - 1941. The first Autocrat was found in Mt. Pleasant Iowa by Don Villars(sp?) at a flea market for $7 I think...

the blue/gray Autocrat was turned up by Brian Quartman somewhere, and had it extracted from him not knowing its rarity. I'll ask him if he has any info on the can.

The most recent Autocrat that showed up on ebay a while back was dug many years ago in Minnesota.

Interesting that none of the known Autocrats can be traced back to a southern origin.

The Lewandowski's had one for sale - $10,000 for a dumper. Needless to say, I passed. But I do remember that they told me that of the few known, there were 2 different variations. Of course, I forgot what the variation was, but I do remember wondering to myself if I'd ever try to get 2 variations or just be happy with one! Of course, I have none, so it's all academic!

I remember watching Lewandowskis get high bid on that Autocrat on ebay back around 2000 for $4,500 which I thought was way to high. Then when that other one popped up on ebay it only got around $1,500 area (more reasonable, possibly cheap) The seller was from Florida but said he dumped it as a Kid when he lived up north which I thought he said was Wisconsin but Bob sez Minnesota. It's one of the 2. Differances are one sez Manhattan Brewing & the other does not. LEON.

There was an ad posted in an earlier Autocrat thread from our local paper which would show that Autocrat was at least sold around New Orleans. Too bad these two guys stole my flux capacitor.

I'd love to go back in time and pick up a few of those.

I guarantee any Autocrats that were thrown away outside around here are long gone. NOTHING steel survives seventy years outside around here. Hell, you're doing good to get something to last twenty years in this rotten climate.

I'd heard that one of the Autocrats was dumped in Alabama, but I don't recall where I heard it and can't confirm it...

I dont know if they were dumped in Alabama or not, but the Bama-Canners used to have thier chapter t-shirt with a picture of an Autocrat can on it

I remember asking one of them why the Autocrat , did someone dump it there? , and he replied," no , they just like the can and it looked good"...so that may have been how the dumped in ALabama rumor started

Below is a link to a pic courtesy Dan B of the Autocrat that the pop can collector had at the Cabin fever reliever show in 2007. Its the one that went for $1.2K on ebay a year earlier. I still crindge every time I see this pic knowing that I did not throw my hat in the ring for the can...

here's one of the ads from the New Orleans Times Picayune I found advertising Autocrat in cans:
autocrat 4-23-42.jpg
It is from 4/23/42, which is after the order stopping canning for the war. I am guessing they had some off-brand cans still lying around that they could fill.

I'm kicking myself for not throwing my hat in the ring, Didn't even attempt a bid figuring it would go for 5 times more then I was willing to bid. It did not :smt017 :smt021 LEON.

Just seeing that ad, and knowing that at least 12 were in New Orleans is a tantalizing bit of information. There must be one somewhere out there - but where?

It looks like Autocrat were also found in Minnesota.

Added pictures of the recent Beercansplus find a few years ago.
I believe there are now 4 known examples across 2 variations.

The twins priced the can at $10K because they were offered that amount for it shortly after they won it. The can was reserved before their list was distributed, so the can was not actually available. I don't believe the can is a dumper either - it appeared to be an indoor can with a lot of humidity.
