Re: New Acquisition Wednesday
" American Can Co. got into cones later than Continental Can Co. and Crown Can Co. - 1938 or so, and they used high profile cones and flat bottoms. Esslinger's used them for the earlier yellow cones and the Ale that matches your can. Two versions of Tam O' Shanter Ale and Beer, A Gunther's Ale and two Gunther's Beers, and a Hornung's Beer also exist. I feel like I'm missing one"
Schmidt's came in flat bottom hi-pro cones too.

Re: New Acquisition Wednesday
At present I am aware of 21 American flat bottom high profiles (this includes the minor variaions).
Major labels are:
Esslinger's Ale
Esslinger's Beer
Gunther's Ale
Gunther's Beer
Hornung Beer
Schmidt's Beer (no Ales made with a flat bottom)
Tam-O-Shanter Ale
Tam-O-Shanter Beer
I hope this helps,
Jim

Also, the silver colored Schmidt’s cones are hi-pro flat-bottom: 185-04 thru 185-07mtracy64 wrote: ↑Sat May 08, 2021 9:56 amAmerican Can Co. got into cones later than Continental Can Co. and Crown Can Co. - 1938 or so, and they used high profile cones and flat bottoms. I believe the green Ale to match your Beer is the toughest of the Esslinger's, but it's interesting that the various dealer/auction sites list sold examples of all of them except the red Beer. I also hadn't really noticed that the USBC shows four variations of the red cone, three of them are offgrade, and the only one re-shot for the BCCA online supplement is the best condition can from the book and is the same example was re-shot to get the five views.
I know it's a good can, but I'll leave it to cone experts to provide detailed information as to how good.

Re: New Acquisition Wednesday
Nice can
I’ve had exactly one American Can Cone which I purchased almost 40 years ago.... always thought it was unusual to look at the Keglined logo on a cone-top.

Re: New Acquisition Wednesday
Tough Gam "Prince" flat from Columbus, OH. Picked it up at a local garage sale over the weekend. Guy said when he collected in the 70's, there was a small find in the wall of an apartment building. This can was one of those cans.

Re: New Acquisition Wednesday
This showed up in my mailbox today. Been chasing it for awhile now. NOT just a run of the mill Schaefer. Notice the IRTP statement (right of seam) on the back. Big time sleeper that doesn’t pop up very often. Check out the killer matching top lid too!

I was the 2nd place bidder and apparently feeling rather stingy that night, LOL!! That can is worth a lot more than the final bid. Good for you for picking it up. The light woodgrain lid is definitely tough to come by. AND, whomever opened it, back in the day, was nice enough to open it exactly between the dotted lines. Very cool.
Congrats!!

Re: New Acquisition Wednesday
A friend of a friend dropped off a small collection at the front door last Wednesday of all days. Had some fun going through it yesterday especially with the Wunderbrau sitting on top of the first box I went through. It had me dreaming of what might be hidden at the bottom. In the end a lot of aluminum, straight and crimped steel, international, a couple of crusty Lubeck's and a Bud flat. Don't know much about the Stone Ginger Beer. It is a flat. Thrilled with Wunderbrau and also added some tabs to the collection.

Re: New Acquisition Wednesday
It's a beauty for sure. Conventional wisdom is that there is only one other real good example, and I'm only aware of a single offgrade can. If you didn't see it, we had a chat about Dan's auction and of course this can came up in discussion.Plusonegolfer wrote: ↑Wed Jun 09, 2021 6:35 pm Pretty jazzed to land this can recently - Been collecting off and on since 1971 and never had this one before. Picked up both the cans on the right that have the alcohol statement in the past couple of weeks. I thought I had all the concave Fritz Brews but noticed the "permit" statement and from an old thread here now know there are 6 total variations and 4 concave bottoms. Still need the "strong" version of the Schmidt and that yellow can that was added in the supplement.

Re: New Acquisition Wednesday
Interesting(OK maybe just to me) thing about the Fritz Brew is it has both a front and a back panel rather than just a front with maybe a couple of side panels or 2 duplicate sides. The only other cone I can think of like this is the brown Duquesne's but I am sure there are maybe a few more?henry porter wrote: ↑Sun Jun 13, 2021 12:57 am

Re: New Acquisition Wednesday
Nice pick-ups for sure, and I'm probably going to have to get a Fritz Brew at some point too. It is odd for a one-faced can to have the seam adjacent to the face rather than opposite it - the Royal Finest LP cone and the Old Reading J-Spout are the only others that come to mind immediately.ConeAddict wrote: ↑Sun Jun 13, 2021 10:57 amInteresting(OK maybe just to me) thing about the Fritz Brew is it has both a front and a back panel rather than just a front with maybe a couple of side panels or 2 duplicate sides. Re: New Acquisition Wednesday
I was looking through the USBC earlier after I asked the question and it looks like all the Rainier "store" brand cones(BB,Salute,KingsTaste,Krug,Lisco) have the face along the seam and you just confirmed Royal Finest as well. Also Valley Brew's, Associated, and Ambassador. Forgot about Old Reading and I have had that cone before. So not so unusual I guess, especially for West Coast cones it seems. Not a group I think I will start a side collection of though.

Re: New Acquisition Wednesday
I had probably the worst known indoor example of this can on the shelf for many years. I wasn't unhappy with it, but I have hoped to upgrade because it's a great label and it's so unusual to see pre-war cans in such high grade.

Awesome example for sure. I believe I was standing right next to you as you made the decision to purchase that can.
At the very least, you were rolling it around in your hand thinking about it. Congrats!!!

Re: New Acquisition Wednesday
Thanks. I missed it when it was offered here, and I'd been kicking it around in my head since Blue/Grey. I held off then because I knew my old Schultz Beer was coming to auction and I was still sending lists to Dan to see what's left from Gene's collection - I must have asked about 80 - 100 cans, and he didn't have a single one of them. I've also recently come to believe there are fewer of these real clean than I used to believe there were.OhioCanGuy wrote: ↑Sun Jun 20, 2021 11:33 am
