Finger Splitter Zip lid variations

#1

Post by OhioCanGuy »

I recently acquired the can on the left as an upgrade to the can on the right.

Can on the left does not have the "Lift Tab - Pull Open" language stamped into the lid like the can on the right. Cans are otherwise identical. I've seen various early zips both ways before, but never really gave it much thought until having these two cans side by side.

I'm assuming the no language version is the absolute earliest zip top, closely followed by the version with instructions?

I don't think I will, but, would anyone consider this enough of a variation to keep both?

Flats, cones & early tabs. Ohio cans, ultra clean cans & shine. East coast cans. Rare rust. And, whatever else catches my eye.

For my collecting parameters - I might keep both if:
1.) Fanatical about Dawson cans and collecting every variation. (I was born in New Bedford and so Dawson is a brand that I have considered collecting more of, but so far I have focused on only Coors flats - where I do collect lid variations "Pilsener" vs. "Export" vs. O.I. instructions.)
2.) Fanatical about lid variations and I want to show the evolution of the lid types as the side by side shows progression. Guessing I would only feel compelled to have one example of each type, and might look to have different brand cans as unless it was one of the bigger multi-brewery brands like Budweiser I am not sure if any one brand would have all the lid variations?

I would have to be sure both were genuine and not new lids. Be happier if the canning plant or canning emblem or seam had a variation as well.

THANKS for putting them side by side - interesting to see the pairing.
Cheers

Still musing about cans

Yes, like Mark said, only keep both if you are fanatical about Dawson. I have some otherwise identical Fox Deluxe cans because of lid variations. Normally, I would not do that.
Focus: Cones and flats from Michigan, South Bend, and Fort Wayne. Foreign cans only if I bought them myself in the country of origin.

Thanks guys for the opinions and info.

No, definitely no affinity for Dawson. Might be something for me to keep my eye out for on some of the OH cans though.

Guess I'll keep the, slightly, older version and move along from there. :smt023

If it did not make sense to keep both I would keep the older one. A pretty interesting group of the very earliest tabs. I have one Canadian can, a Cinci, that is a finger splitter zip with instructions. I kept both because it was unusual and I am a semifanatic about Canadian cans. With international cans I am only a semi semi fanatic. Tom
